what causes food poisoning?
Food poisoning is when you eat or drink something that has been contaminated either by a toxic substance or by certain living organisms such as viruses. These organisms that produce the toxins (toxic or poisonous substances) are most commonly bacteria or fungi.
In extreme cases it can cause death but there are many other less fatal symptoms that are still very unpleasant. People more at risk than others include babies and young children, women that are pregnant, old and already sick people and people with lower immune systems (this means that their bodies defenses against illnesses are not as good as people with good immune systems).
Millions of people in the United States alone get sick because of food poisoning, 5,000 of which will die every year.
They are a lot of causes of food poisoning such as bacteria and viruses. Some groups of bacteria include:
norovirus (norwalk Virus)
The salmonella group is the most common kind of food poisoning and it can last for up to a week,but some people can be cured without treatment (by there immune system) though salmonella is more likely to cause serious illness in older adults or infants. Salmonella is killed by cooking and pasteurization (a way to cleanse food by heating it up then immediately cooling it down) and can be found foods like raw meat and raw eggs.
The type known as E. coli lives on in your stomach after you have eaten something that it infests (like raw fruits and vegetables, raw milk or something that has been made from raw milk) and will give you bloody diarrhoea, failure of your kidneys or sometimes it can even cause death!
Cures for food poisoning
There are many different kinds of ways to get food poisoning so the effects can vary a lot, and of course some cases can be much more serious than others, but the most common effects of food poisoning are nausea (feeling sick), vomiting and diarrhoea.
Again depending on what kind of food poisoning you get you can start to have the symptoms anytime between one hour and several weeks.
Bacteria tend to cause diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal cramps (stomach cramps), fever, headache, dehydration and shock.
Worm-like parasites called 'Helminths' can cause muscle pain, weight loss, malnutrition (meaning you are not getting an equal or correct intake of vitamins and nutrients which can lead to improper growth) and skin lesions (meaning that there is something wrong with your skin tissue).
Moulds often trigger and allergic reaction to them when you breathe them in and this can lead to coughing and sneezing, sore throat, difficulty breathing, baldness, skin rash and many other non-fatal symptoms. However if you eat a toxin made by mold it can cause much more serious symptoms including: internal organ damage, mental problems, cancer or even death!

Besides bacteria and viruses, other causes of food poisoning include parasites, toxic substances known as toxins and mould (a type of fungus). Parasites are creatures that effectively live either on or in any unwitting animals known as 'hosts' for protection and food. There are many ways that parasites are transferred but there are hundreds of different kinds that travel through food, yet the most common ones are
The most common kinds of food that can contain parasites are generally foods that have not been fully cooked (such as undercooked meat and fish) or completely raw vegetables that have been in contact with human or animal dung.
Only some kinds of moulds can produce natural toxins called "mycotoxins" which make you ill, whilst others you can eat and be fine (such as the mould on blue cheese).

There many ways of curing food poisoning, for instance:
If you have already been poisoned some ways of getting better more quickly are: avoid eating any big meals (as that can help prevent vomiting and diarrhoea), drink lots of fluid (adults should drink at least 6 cups of water a day to recover), like water, as it will avoid dehydration (because vomiting can also cause you to lose water) and finally get lots of rest to build up your strength .
Some ways to prevent getting poisoned in the first place are to: always clean everything that comes into contact with food (like your hands and kitchen surfaces) both before and AFTER you handle food, especially afterwards if you have been handling meat, make sure you cook items properly to avoid bacteria that live in raw foods and finally make sure that you store raw foods AWAY from foods that don't need to be cooked at all, as that can prevent then raw foods contaminating the others.
