There was sufficient goods supply. The evidence is," The most important source of income for Singapore is the entreport trade- redistribution of goods manufactured or produced elsewhere funneling through Singapore and out again to other destinations." There was a constant supply of goods as goods were imported through Singapore and Singapore was depended on the entrepot trade since it was the most important source of income.

Singapore was a succesfull trading port. The evidence is,"The tin and rubber industries in Malaya help Singapore to grow and develop into an important port." With the help from Malaya, SIngapore became an important port as goods need to pass through Singapore to other destinations. Without it, goods cannot be exported.
Political (Japanese Occupation)
Japanese Occupation changed people’s life in such way that made them rebellious as people's need of independence grew.
The evidence is, “The MJAPA resistance consisted of attacks on Japanese troops, police stations and local policemen, informers, and collaborators and anyone who appeared to be collaborating with the Japanese.” The occupation instilled so much fear in people that turned them to rebel against it and protect what they fear to lose. Their country. The Malayan People’s Anti-Japanese Army was formed to become a substantial guerilla army and it operated in the jungles of Perek and Johore. They attacked anyone whom they thought was a potential pro-Japanese. An era of mistrust and susceptibility was created by them where no one could be trusted and their top priority was the fall of the Japanese Government so that they can form a government of their own and have a stable political future of Singapore. Therefore, Japanese Occupation created revolutionary environment and people were insurgents.

Japanese Occupation also provided self centered government. The evidence is, the teacher teaching Japanese .It i which were only conscious to expand their culture and their way of living within the people of Singapore so that it would provide them them the environment of Japan and make it easier for them to rule. Therefore, under Japanese, people lived the way Japanese wanted them to live.

There was food shortage during Japanese Occupation. The evidence is," People had to go to the black market for some of their necessities almost as soon as the Occupation began because the usual supply chain was broken." They had to risk their life to go to the black market just to get food for their family. Therefore there wassn't enough food supply of food.

The people were poor. The evidence, "A buyer would approach a seller, state was wants and the supplier would nip off somewhere to get.'' The seller was so in need of money that he needed to find a way just to get the goods and sell them to the buyer.
Economical
Comparison~
Criterion 1
There was change in economy. It is because as before the Japanese Occupation, Singapore was a successful trading port which stabilised the economy and provided sufficient food through importation from other countries. However during the Japanese Occupation, the economy started to go downhill and broken the supply chain.

Criterion 2
There was a change in the amount of jobs available. Before the Japanese Occupation, Singapore had more jobs available due to the sufficient supply of goods imported through Singapore. During the Japanese Occupation, amount of jobs started to decrease since there was insufficient goods supplied and people had to risk their lives to do business in the Black Marke
Economical (Japanese Occupation)
I can infer that during Japanese Occupation there was low trade and economy started going down. The evidence is ''Some were goods hoarded by individuals at the start of the occupation who were now putting them into black market to get cash for other necessities".Thus people were unemployed so they had to sell their goods to earn money and support their family

I can also infer that during Japanese Occupation there was food shortage. The evidence is ''Some goods in the black market were goods looted in the turbulent period before the Japanese restored order.'' This shows that goods were destroyed during war and therefore there wasn't sufficient supply of goods causing food shortage.

I can infer that before Japanese Occupation there was enough supply of goods. The evidence is "The most important source of income of Singapore is the entrepot trade. This shows that there was sufficient supply of good.

I can also infer that before Japanese Occupation people in Singapore were affluent. The evidence is "Again its position at one end of the of the Straits of Malacca, now the favoured sea lane for the streamers going via Suex Canal, makes it a natural stopover for supplies". This shows that they earn a lot of money through trading as Singapore was so called the perfect place for trading by all the natural means.
Economical
Comparison~
Both sources are different in how life was in before Japnese Occupation and during Japanese Occupation.
There was high in trade. This is evident"The most important income of Singapore is the trade".
This means that there was sufficient amount of goods supplied before Japanese Occupation. However during Japanese Occupation there was low in trade and economy was bad. The evident from source B which shows that people had to gave something in exchange in order to receive the daily necessities. This means that during Japanese Occupation there was insufficient amount of good supplied for everyone.

I can infer from the source that the British took full advantage as Singapore as a trading port and did not want opium addiction interfere with the colony’s development. The evidence is, “with Chinese immigrants come the Chinese triads and the evils of opium smoking” and “ in the end, the colonial administration is obliged to start a police force to impose law and order”. Since euphoria is one of opium’s side-effects, it may lead to indecent behaviour that may threaten other people who were in Singapore then, especially foreigners from different lands. This may evoke a threat to the people which may cause the new immigrants impression that Singapore is not a safe are thus causing the colonial administration to impose law and order.

I can also infer from the source that the Japanese had evoked fear and terror throughout the people. The evidence is “you’re always confined in the house because she was afraid that because we were girls we would get rape”, this was a girl talking about her mother who did not let her out of the house. The mother may have been extremely paranoid that her daughter might get raped by the Japanese and she was aware of this probably because there may have been incidents where they raped women. The Japanese’s selfish actions may have caused the people to live in anxiety and fear.

There was a change in rule since the Japanese were much harsher and they inflicted more
physical pain than the British would however, the people in Singapore was constantly over
the rule of stronger country administrations. There was also a change in the fact that the people before the Japanese Occupation had more freedom since the British were lenient and did not seem to punish. But with that being said, the people still faced law and order

I can infer that the people lived in comfort .”Singapore is……it”This show that the people lived in harmony and safely as they have their own group of people and Singapore has many things open for the people. The other evidence is”There are also….world”This shows that the people have enough food and live comfortably as there are many food and things available and there is no food shortage so the people do not need to worry. There is also many job opportunities as there are many trade in Singapore .
I can also infer that the living condition in Singapore was good. The evidence is “Nearby….carpenters”This shows that the people are able to get things easily as there are shops nearby that sell what they need. The evidence is “There are….the world”The trade was good in Singapore so many things are available for the people to buy and they have many jobs available for the people to earn a living.

I can infer that the people lived in fear due to the lack of medical care. The evidence is “There were also many isolated cases of brutality towards those who needed medical care .”This means that the people were afraid of getting sick and did not want the illness to spread to others by treating the sick badly. The other evidence is”Yes,till now I cannot forget …Just slightly ill and they are buried for that. I heard this from other people." This means that the people had witness before the cruelty of being sick and was afraid that they will die because of just getting a simple sickness. Hence the people lived in fear because of the treatment given to sick people.
I can also infer that the living condition of the people in Singapore is very bad. The evidence is “Serious food shortage during the Japanese Occupation led to malnutrition and low immunity against diseases such as beri-beri,pellagra and tuberculosis, while poor public health led to the prevalence of malaria and diseases such as typhoid and dysentery. This shows that the people did not have enough food and also have poor public health leading to many diseases which will spread really fast with low immunity against the diseases. The other evidence is “The use of untreated human faeces as fertilizer also contributed to the spread of diseases.”‘. This shows that the people are so poor that they try to save money by using other means which resulted in the spread of many diseases. Hence the living condition in Singapore was really bad because of the lack of resources and the spread of diseases.

Comparison~
1.There is a change in the how the people lived as there is a different in the resources available to the people.
However there is still some poverty in Singapore before and during Japanese Occupation.
2.There is a change in the living condition in Singapore .
However, there wasn't any factor which remained constant between these two timelines.

Political (Colonial Rule)
I can infer that the government during the colonial time provided stability and better future for the people. The evidence is, " Singapore is certainly the most convenient city i ever saw..." This shows that the government was securing the future of the country and making it convenient for people to live in.

I can also infer that government was increasing the standard of Singapore worldwide. The evidence is, " Because of many different trades, one can do more business in less time in Singapore than in any other town in the world." The government provided opportunities for traders to carry out their business efficiently, also gaining popularity in the world. Thus, the government used statistics to higher Singapore's name in the world.

{Political}
Japanese Occupation demolished the faith of people in government and turned them against it. During colonial time, people let the government take all the decisions because they knew that they were in safe hands but Japanese destroyed that belief of people through the violence they applied on them for them to obey the government. Therefore, Japanese occupation not only snatched people's trust but also made them rebellious, giving them reasons to fight against the government. Also, Japanese applied there forceful statistics for the people to follow and blend in their culture, making it easier for them to rule on the people the same way people are ruled in Japan, and that is how Japanese Occupation changed People's live.

There is also a change in how the people lived as there is a difference in the resources available before and during Japanese Occupation

Group Response
{Economical}
The Japanese Occupation changed the lives of the people in Singapore and caused them to have economy problems such as the state of economy. This is evident from, "
most important source of income for Singapore is the entreport trade- redistribution of goods manufactured or produced elsewhere funneling through Singapore and out again to other destinations.
"
Singapore was a successful trading port which stabilized the economy and provided sufficient food through importation from other countries. However during the Japanese Occupation, economy was bad. The evidence is,''
People had to go to the black market for some of their necessities almost as soon as the Occupation began because the usual supply chain was broken.
'' This shows that the economy started to go downhill which broken the supply chain. Hence, then Japanese Occupation had changed the lives of the people.

Political
Comparison~

The government's effect on the lives of people people's reaction towards the government.
The colonial government was appreciated by people. The evidence is, "Singapore is certainly the most convenient city i ever saw.." while under Japanese Occupation, people turned rebellious and were against the government and also demanded independence. The evidence is, "The MJAPA resistance consisted of attacks on Japanese troops, police stations and local policemen, informers, and collaborators and anyone who appeared to be collaborating with the Japanese." Thus, this shows that compared to colonial rule, people were unhappy with the government during Japanese Occupation.

The government's statistics for the development of Singapore.
The colonial government wanted Singapore to grow and become a famous trading port worldwide. The evidence is, "Because of many different trades, one can do more business in less time in Singapore than in any other town in the world." While the Japanese wanted Singapore to take over their culture and develop according to their ways. The evidence is, the students being taught Japanese. Thus Colonial government and Japanese government had their own ways to develop Singapore and they both wanted Singapore to grow in their own way.
