by James Baldwin Plot Themes within the Novel Commercial Final Words James Baldwin describes the course of the fourteenth birthday of John Grimes in Harlem, 1935. Baldwin recounts the lives of John's Parents and aunt to link this urban boy in the north to his slave grandmother in an earlier south. The first section follows John's thoughts about being raised in a church family such as his talk with his mother Elizabeth, and his brother Roy. The second section deals with his aunt Florence and her life with her husband's drinking. The third section deals with his father Gabriel and his life before becoming a preacher and his life with Deborah, and Esther. The fourth section deals with his mother Elizabeth and her life with Richard before Gabriel. The final section deals with John's vision. Racism
