As the video game industry grows, more universities are creating curriculums to support careers in video game design. These courses are usually offered within the computer science or media departments. Video Game Designers typically have a bachelor's degree in Game Design, Computer Engineering or Computer science which takes four to five years to complete. Courses in a Game Design degree program may include project management, integrated video design and technology, game prototyping and level design.Skill Requirements for Game Design Game Designers typically work in a managerial role on a video game project, helping to manage budgets, work schedules and project timelines. Attention to detail is important, as are clear writing and communication skills and enthusiasm and knowledge about the video game industry

There is no formal promotion route for computer games designers. With experience, it is possible to be promoted from junior designer to designer. Successful, experienced designers with project and people-management skills may progress to become lead designers

Talented designers may be offered the chance to work overseas. It may be possible to become self-employed, doing freelance work on a contract basis

Working hours in the computer games industry can vary. In many jobs you would work standard office hours, with some unsocial hours and overtime to meet deadlines.You could be based in an office or a studio, depending on your role. You would spend most of your time sitting at a computer 30-40 per week
Starting salaries for artists and programmers are usually around 25,000 a year Experienced and skilled designers, head programmers and producers can earn between £30,000 and 50,000
