Genres of Fiction What is Genre?

A genre is a type or category or something

Ex: What are all the different types of


Genres of fiction means the different types or categories of fiction in literature Fable
A short tale
Used to teach a moral lesson
Often with animals as maincharacters.
The moral or lesson is usually stated at one sentence at the end of the story.

Moral: Slow and steady wins the race Myth
1. Main characters are gods and goddesses:
Human in appearance
Never get old
supernatural abilities
Can travel a long distance instantly
2. Major conflict
3. Underlying reason for the myth to explain the “why”
4. The myth has been told over and over from generation to generation. Fantasy
contains elements that are not realistic
talking animals
magical powers
often set in a medieval universe
possibly involving mythical beings Mystery
a novel involving:
solving a puzzling event or situation
something unknown
solving a crime
centered around a person who investigates wrongdoing
centered around a person or persons employed to obtain secret information Realsitic Fiction
Stories that take place in modern times
Characters are involved in events that could happen in real life. Historical Fiction
Stories centered around the basis of a partially historical situation
A novel set in a historical period Science Fiction
Stories that often tell about science and technology of the future
Involving partially true fictions laws or theories of science
Settings: in the future, in space, on a different world, in a different universe or dimension Adventure
Always has a hero that is strong and quick-thinking
Usually has a villian
Action & Violence
Hero has a series of challenges to overcome
Quest - the hero is usually motivated by someone or something in danger that he must travel far to find
Now let's try to use our knowledge of the different types of genres in fiction to identify the correct genre of two stories 1. 2.

Zeus, the king of all the gods, had three sisters. Hera, his wife and sister, was the goddess of marriage and the queen of all the gods.

Hestia, another of his sisters, was a much loved goddess by the woman of Greece - Hestia was the goddess of home and hearth.

His third sister, Demeter, was in charge of the harvest. All the gods jobs were important. Demeter's job was very important. If she was upset, the crops could die. Everyone, gods and mortals, worked hard to keep Demeter happy. What made her happy was enjoying the company of her daughter, Persephone.

The ant who was still busy workin at keeping the food dry said, "I tioled to save the food from the winter freeze while you spent the summer playing in ease. I stored just enough food for the winter, it's true, but I can't feed you all winter, or I'll starve, too."
The ant gave the grasshopper a few crumbs, but the grasshopper was cold, miserable and hungry all winter. The next summer the grasshopper worked hard to store food for the upcoming winter.....
