-Jane is no longer alone.
-After suffering for years from brutality,
Jane is taught importance of education and decency. -Charity school for orphan children
-Run by Mr. Brocklehurst
-Dreary conditions = big change for Jane Eyre
o Institute- prison
o finds warmth in people, not places.
- Reference to a school located in Norwood, England.
- The many rooms was characteristic of the schools at these times.
- Historical evidence of an epidemic at these schools.
- Lowood - Cowan Bridge school Bronte’s sister attended.

-At Lowood:
-Aquires an older friend and later adopts her ways (Helen is more experienced and mature)

“Life appears too short to be spent in nursing animosity, or registering wrongs”
-Jane: not sensitive to others' opinions of her and independent.
-No need for love by others or approval from peers, where before, for example, student's opinions of her after Mr. Brocklehurst's accusations upsetted her.
-Jane Eyre seeks a career as a governess after the deaths of her only friends, Miss Temple and Helen Burns.

Lowood ·Religious “temple” for Jane-need of guidance while attending a Christian school.

-Knowledge, empathy, and also influences her career choice to teach and instruct others.
-When Miss Temple leaves Lowood, Jane leaves soon afterwards. Function of Miss Temple Jane Eyre(1983)- Miss Temple Onomastics -Jane Eyre:
-her name includes both her first name and last name signifies her search for independence.
-"Eyre" is similar to the French word "errer", which means to wander, which Jane does from Gateshead to Lowood to Thornsfield in search of a home.
-"ire" - Her desire to seek justice for brutal treatment by Mr. Brocklehurst is quenched by Miss Temple and Helen Burns. -Miss Temple:
-"temple"- religious haven for Jane Eyre
-Place for Jane Eyre to seek peace and inspiration
-Helen Burns
-Instructors believe she will "burn" in hell
-Helen Burns > Hel en Burns > Burns en Hel >

-Irony- a bright afterlife.
-Furthermore, "Hel" - Greek root for light (Helen of Troy- torch)
-A light and source of inspiration to Jane Eyre.

-Ironically, does not rebel against her punishments. Onomastics, ctd. -Ms. Scatcherd- very rough name similar to her violent and unfair punishments toward Helen Burns.

-Mr. Brocklehurst- bitter and tough name > brutal and unreasonable behavior toward lower class pupils at Lowood.

-Lowood - "low" + "wood"
o dark and gloomy place
o "low" -lower class and low expectations
o "wood" - easy to burn > more anger and ire. Onomastics, ctd. -Helen Burns: religious self-sacrifice
