Genius Hour
What is Genius Hour?
How does Genius Hour work?
On Fridays, all students who are caught up in class will be allowed to work on their Genius Hour project.

Students will work independently or with a partner on a project of their choosing. They will research, create and present their project to their peers over the course of the semester.

Students who are behind in class will meet with the teacher to work on assignments that are missing or need to be redone. If they finish before GH time is up, they will be allowed to switch to project work for the remainder of the class.
How long did you say we have?
Students will have as long as you need to work on their project. Work may be done solely in class on Friday's, or students may choose to work on their project outside of class as well.

When you finish one project and present, you start on another.

No one can tell you how long a Genius Project takes. That's up to you. The goal is to keep moving forward.
How will you hold me accountable for working?
Each week you will fill out a GH Exit Slip. This paper acts as a guide for you to keep track of goals and progress, and also serves as a quick check for me to monitor your progress.

Each Friday, students will receive a grade based on a rubric. The pieces of the rubric include time on task, effort, and use of scientific practices.

Most of the time, you have no control over the information that you learn at school. It's easy to become lost in the fast-paced, state-mandated curriculum. Where is your chance to learn about what interests you?

That's where Genius Hour comes in. Genius Hour is a concept modeled after the "20% Time" that Google engineers are given to develop new and creative ideas.

During Genius Hour, you will have an opportunity to learn about the concepts and ideas that matter to you. You will have support and guidance in the classroom, and have time in the schedule to pursue your own interests.

What's your passion?


Wait...I have to what?
You have to share, that's right....SHARE your project with others. What that sharing looks like is up to you, but you have to present what you have learned or created with your peers.

So what can I research?
You can learn about anything you want! Any topic, any subject, and area.
You choose!

Your project just has to be something that can't be answered by a quick Internet search.

It has to "have legs".
That means research. Experiments. Effort.

And when you are done, you will present what you've learned to your peers.


What does this have to do with science?
How do I keep track of it all?
The brad section of your science folder will be your Genius Hour recording place.

This brad section will include: planning sheets, exit slips, and research. All of your Genius Hour information will go into this area.


Science is all about being curious, and working to answer questions. As you work through your Genius Hour project, you will also work through 8 scientific practices:

1. Asking questions and defining problems
2. Developing and using models
3. Planning and carrying out investigations
4. Analyzing and interpreting data
5. Using mathematics and computational thinking
6. Constructing explanations and designing solutions
7. Engaging in argument from evidence
8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating
information
