Transcript of Sherlock Holmes investigates The Hound of the Baskervilles

Conan Doyle studied Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He met there other well-known authors like Robert Louis Stevenson.

One of his teachers, called Joseph Bell, was considered a master at observation, logic, deduction and diagnosis.

He was writer while been a doctor. While
waiting patients, he wrote part of his novels.
Other aspects of interests
He was a great sportsman who played cricket, golf and football.

He had interest in mystical subjects, participated in experiments of telepathy.

He was member of the Freemasons and The Ghost Club
He is most known for his character Sherlock Holmes.

He created a second famous character: Professor Challenger, from The Lost World.

His works include from fantasy and science-fiction novels to poetry and plays

The plot
There is an ancient legend about a hound in the family of the Baskervilles.
Sir Charles' death brings Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to investigate the case, after the visit of Sir Charles' inheritor from Canada. Everyone in the place seem to be involved in the case. A great network of information that can only be solved by the great Sherlock Holmes

He was known for drawing long deductions from the smallest observations.

Sherlock Holmes is a man of science, undistracted by gentler passions, who uses his wits to solve practical and moral dilemmas
The character
The first story appears in 1886. 56 short stories and 4 novels were written. The last one is from 1927.

The first two were published in in magazines, where the character gained popularity.

All but 4 stories are narrated by Dr Watson, 2 by Sherlock Holmes and 2 in third person.
The novels represent the good, the bad and the ugly of the Victorian society: its ideals, its accomplishments and its fears

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived in a period of prosperity of the British Empire thanks to the resources and labor from the colonies. During this prosperity, business and technology blossomed and popularity increased form 1 to 6 million people. This created overcrowding problems like unemployment and crime, which are shown in Doyles' novels.

Although we've seen it shows the society of the time, it is not the usual boring story.

It's interesting, sometimes funny, and many things happen. The difficult thing is to get everything and follow the deductions and relations of all that happens in the book
