Requirements for Life
How to meet all these needs?
* Abiotic elements (Sun, soil, water, rocks) help living organisms find shelter, food, and other needs for survival.

The Earth's oxygen supply comes from plants and other similar organisms. Oxygen is essential to life.
Food for ALL consumers comes from plants because plants are the only organisms able to produce their own energy. Producers are at the base of all food interactions.
The roles of producers
The Elements of an Ecosystem
Producers create their own energy by using sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis. Plants use the sun's energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into food for itself and other organisms.
Shelters can be built from products that come from plants. For example, birds use sticks to make their nests and fish use aquatic plants to hide from predators.
Herbivores only eat plants. Some examples are cows and mice.
Omnivores eat plants and other animals. Some examples are humans and bears.
Carnivores eat other animals (and very few plants). Some examples are wolves and trout.
Specialized Consumers
All living things produce waste that comes from food that they eat. In addition, when organisms die they leave behind a body of no use. Certain living things feed on these waste items.
Scavengers eat dead bodies. Some examples are crows, hyena, ravens, and maggots.
Decomposers break down dead plants and animals. Mushrooms, worms and mold are examples.
