The Attack on
Pearl Harbor Why was Japan mad with the U.S.? To protest Japanese invasions in Asia, the United States stopped sending oil, airplanes, metals, aircraft parts, and aviation gasoline to Japan. Badly needing the oil that Roosevelt had cut off, Japan decided to invade the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in late 1941. When did the attack happen? December 7, 1941 What happened? Japanese airplanes attacked the base with machine guns and bombs. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor lasted about 2 hours. What was the damage? What was the U.S. reaction? President Roosevelt gave a speech to Congress calling the attack a “day that will live in infamy.” On December 8, Congress declared war on Japan, and the United States entered World War II. 8 battleships were destroyed or severely damaged. 180 planes were destroyed. Over 2000 people were killed, and over 1000 were wounded What was at Pearl Harbor? The U.S. had a navy base there with battleships and airplanes. Where is Pearl Harbor?
