Ask the Dance Teacher
How do you decide the music ?
Listen to lots of songs and decide which song matches the group of kids.
How do you decide the choreography ?
After I pick the I music decide what type of dance will match it best.
How do you decide where people go in the dance?
One way to give everybody in front, sometimes by height.
What makes a good tap dancer?
Someone that dances on their toes and keeps their feet close to the floor. They can also hear the rhythm of music and taps

History of Tap
Tap originated in southern plantations danced by servants.
Mixture of African tribal dances and Scottish, Irish, and English clog dance, hornpipes and jigs.
Tap dancer Bill Bojangles Robinson was the first African American person to have his own show in the 1930s.
Tap dancing films made people happy during Wold War 2 such as Swing Time, Broadway Melody of 1940 and Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Tap became less popular in movies but can still be seen on stage like and in many dance studios world wide.
What is Tap?
Famous Tap Dancers
Bill "Bojangles" Robinson
: Stared in films and theaters being the highest-paid black performer of the era. Robinson used his popularity to challenge and overcome racial barriers and was famous for his rhythmic tap dancing up and down stairs.
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers
: He was an actor, dancer and choreographer. Ginger Rogers was his dance partner in many films.
Gene Kelly
: Also a film and dance star of the Second World War era famous for his dance in singing in the rain.
Gregory Hines:
Revived taps popularity in the 70s and 80s bringing it back into the movies.
Savion Glover
: Modern day tapper.
Ann Miller
: In Kiss Me Kate she breaks into a iconic tap routine on top of a coffee table. She also stared in many musicals during the 1940s and 1950s.
How to Start to Tap

Find a dance teacher and studio.
Get the right clothes- leotard, shorts, bra top, dance tights.
Get the right tap shoes: Beginner, heeled and oxford.
Tap dancing is fast paced so good physical fitness is needed.
Learn the moves.

National tap dancing day is May 25 each year.
A definition of tap is a step dance tapped out audibly by means of shoes with hard soles or soles and heels to which taps have been added.
No one really knows when the phrase "tap dance" was first used, perhaps as early as 1900, but it didn't appear in print until around 1928.
