Keynote # 2
YU-KAI CHOU is an experienced Entrepreneur as well as a Gamification Consultant & Speaker. He has been a regular speaker/lecturer on Gamification at organizations like Stanford University, Google Inc., The Internet Marketing Conference, Draper Richards Retreat, UCLA, UBC Sauders School of Business and many more.
Yu-kai was one of the earliest pioneers in Gamifcation, starting his work in the industry in 2003 and was rated as one of the Top 10 Gamification Gurus by Leaderboarded. Yu-kai is also the creator of The Complete Gamification Framework: Octalysis as well as the video series The Beginner's Guide to Gamification. He is the Co-Founder and Head of Product for RewardMe, a digital loyalty platform that aims to gamify offline commerce and was rated by AlwaysOn as one of the Top 10 Private Companies to Watch. RewardMe also won Best Commercial App at the first location-based service awards "The Locals." Yu-kai is also a Partner at the premium internet operations consulting firm Spark Solutions.
Prior to RewardMe and Spark Solutions, Yu-kai founded a variety of startups, including FDCareer (rated on Mashable as one of the Top 10 Social Networks for Gen-Ys) and Viralogy, a service that attracted hundreds of thousands of bloggers and social medians. He has consulted for a variety of companies, from seed stage startups to Fortune 500 companies such as such as eBay and Wells Fargo.
Yu-kai is a Board Director for the California Student Sustainability Coalition, and was elected a Top 50 Young Leaders of California to attend Arnold Schwarzenegger's Governor Global Climate Summit along with the leaders of each nation. He is also a Board Advisor for many organizations and companies through out North America, Europe, and Asia, including TheStartupAngel, BALANCE Edutainment (creators of Pacha's Pajamas), Loki Studios (creators of Geomon and sold to a large technology company), and Zapt (Meta-Game on top of the Twitter Platform).
Yu-kai is based in the Bay Area in California, USA.

Sebastian Deterding is a researcher and designer usually flown in for some throrough German grumpiness. He is a sought-after speaker on playful and gameful design invited internationally to venues like Interaction, Lift, Games+Learning+Society, Google Tech Talks, GDC, CHI, reboot, or Web Directions, and his thoughts have been covered by The Guardian, The New Scientist, EDGE Magazine, and others.
As designer, he has helped create playful and persuasive experiences
for clients including the BBC, Greenpeace, Bertelsmann, Deutsche
Telekom, Xing, Otto, and numerous startups. Before that, he was
program manager multimedia at the German Federal Agency for Civic
Education, and user experience designer at publisher Gruner+Jahr.
As researcher at the Hans Bredow Institute for Media Research at
Hamburg University, his work and publications focuses on the
increasing pervasiveness of games, play, and software in everyday
interactions and what ramifications this holds for society, ethics,
and design. He is currently hosting the Gamification Research Network,
and co-editing a book on the topic to appear with MIT Press in 2013.

If you believe gamification is a technology solution to a people
problem, you're screwed
Gamification is: hot, hyped, oversold, misunderstood, unavoidable, a buzzword, a question mark, a quick fix, a huge unfulfilled potential.
In the past three years, the notion of infusing digital products and services with game elements to make them more engaging has been stirring up the digital industries. Multiple vendors have sprung up that sell gamification as a software service, and gamification gurus are beginning to litter the online airwaves like social media experts in years before.
Beyond the noise and the hype, gamification answers to a deeper shift in markets and workplaces: Today, what sets great products and services apart from merely decent ones are not more features (let alone lower prices). What attracts talent to workplaces and motivates them to stay and excel is not money (beyond fair pay): Both passionate users and passionate employees are driven by the experience of accomplishing and getting better at what you value. This talk argues that gameful design can deliver precisely on that demand. It will walk you through the what, why, and how of gamification, as well as the pitfalls along the way.
