2013 documentary that went viral after support from major media outlets such as CNN. Can watch it on Netflix.
Tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity at Sea World
SeaWorld Entertainment refused to take part in the production of Blackfish, and later claimed the film was inaccurate and misleading.
"Truth About Blackfish"
Two Central Premises
Former SeaWorld Employees
Dawn Brancheau's death
'Truth about Blackfish'
Seaworld states on their website, "Blackfish is a propoganda, not a documentary"
Two major premises:
1. Life at Seaworld is harmful for the killer whales and for the trainers working with these animals
2. Seaworld has attempted to cover up the tragic death of trainer Dawn Brancheau
Former Seaworld Employees
Those actors in Blackfish have not worked at Seaworld in over 20 years, and did not personally work with the orca's
They have little or no firsthand knowledge of those experiences they spoke about
The Blackfish cast is unfamiliar with the current conditions and techniques at Seaworld
Dawn Branchau's Death
The opening clips of Dawn swimming with Tillikum, along with the 911 call led people into thinking that those clips were moments prior to the attack.
Unlike stated in the film, Tillikum did not swollow Dawn's arm
The film also leads its viewers to think that Seaworld blames Dawn for her own death, however they do not. She was her collegue and they miss her dearly.
Role of the Media
The media has been playing a dramatic role, both in the promotion of the film and the response of SeaWorld.
The film originally aired on CNN and still has a heavy presence on CNN's website at www.cnn.com/blackfish
CNN Films' original documentary programming features the best storytellers and filmmakers whose stories captivate audiences, encourages dialogue and inspires action. (cnn.com)
#Blackfish: according to Twitter's media blog the night the film aired there were 67,673 tweets seen by 7.3 million people.
Local and national news have given the crisis a lot of attention, including protests against SeaWorld
Role of the Media
SeaWorld immediately responded with interviews on major network and local news outlets as well as using full page newspaper ads, twitter, Facebook, Instagram and of course their own website seaworldparks.com in their response.
A full page open letter released by SeaWorld disputes the film's claims and points out inaccuracies, while highlighting the park's care for its animal conservation and animal rescue efforts.
SeaWorld's heavy web campaign is still ongoing: Using the same media platforms that made the film such a success.
Recent tweets are focused on rescued and rehabilitated animals as well as links to interviews with trainers.
On its Facebook page, SeaWorld rolled out sponsored ads in news feeds
Instagram tag #seaworldcares
Precautions were adopted with Tillikum after the death of the trainers
Trainers have not been in the water with the whales since 2010
Tillikum never "ate" Dawn like the movie stated in the beginning
The 911 call in the beginning of the flm was completely made up
