Amana Ranks First for Health and Safety Across ASHGHAL Projects
On April 10, 2014 The Qatari Public Works Authority (ASHGHAL) awarded Amana Qatar Contracting with a certificate for the best health and safety practices for the month March on the healthcare center projects in Doha

Compared against others across ASHGHAL’s 35 ongoing projects, Amana achieved top marks thanks to our comprehensive

- ensure the well-being of all employees
*what happened:
in a metal fabrication shop, a forklift was shifting the metal plates. The load was 1.5 m wide and weighed about 2.7 tons. The metal plates were being carried on accustom-made load-handling rack attached to the forks.
The operator traveled with the load elevated about 2 m off the ground so that it could clear welding booth set up near a metal fabrications workstation.
The forklift approached the workstation where the fabricator was welding with his back to the forklift.

The fabricator was wearing a welding helmet and hearing protection. He did not hear the forklift operators attempts to get his attention. Just as the forklift operator applied the brakes, the fabricator turned toward the forklift with its elevated load. The metal plates slid off the forklifts load rack, the forklift tipped forward and the load rack itself slid off the forks
The result
The fabricator was knocked to the ground and suffered serious injuries with fractured and broken bones.
The Accident Causation theory:
The different ways that can lead accident
-Safety procedures such as measurement, inspection, correction, and investigation are ignored or given insufficient attention
-Employees do not receive proper orientation

- Employees are not given sufficient safety training

Corrective and preventive measures
Manufacturer instruction shall be followed strictly while using any forklifts.
. Manufacturer shall be consulted before using any custom-made load-handling attachments, racks or pallets that may affect the stability and rated capacity of forklifts.
. Provide specific written safe work procedures for the operation of forklifts.
Train the forklift operators on the specific
Provide adequate training to employees
and insure competent supervision
Develop specific risk assessments based on hazards specific to the worksite, and make sure they are enforced.
. Ensure that mobile equipment operators are directed by signaler with an unobsructed view of the area that the vehicle is backing into.
. Keep forklift routes clear, if necessary ,change workplace layout to keep forklift traffic away from workstations and pedestrians.

A set of procedures that had to be done to avoid such an incident
1- Use an effective means of communication to alert workers who are in the operating forklift and deploy signal man.
2- Ensure a clear view of the work area before moving loads. Do not travel with an elevated load.

3- Ensure that approved load-handling attachments, racks, or pallets and loads that could shift or slip during operation are property secured. refer manual.
4- Ensure that mobile equipment backup alarms are audible above ambient noise levels

.5 external trainings (Basic first aid , fire fighting and rigger) conducted covering 30 employees with atotal of 240 training man-hours.
.internal training were conducted ( on 28 different training courses) across the organization covering 1072 employees with a total of 1362 man-hours.

DNV audit (recertification for ISO 9001 and periodic audit for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001) was successfully completed during December 2013 , no major non conformances were issued by DNV .

Permit to work
A permit to work procedure is a formal written system used to control certain types of work which are potentially hazardous.

.Objective of permit :
The primary objectives of the procedure to ensure proper authorization of designated work.

.The essential features of permit to work:
clear definition of who may authorize particular work .
specific instruction and training .
specific work to be carried out within certain time constraints .

Line management :
.Identify , nature, extend of the job , hazards involved.
.limitation as to the extend of the work and time during.
a system of control must be provided.
.to ensure that the part of the plant , installation or equipment affected by the work is in a safe condition before normal work is resumed.

Jobsite Evaluation – This half day evaluatidemands of the job are compared to their current abilities. A report is then produced containing recommendations for modifications or actions to be taken to support the employee at workon assesses an employee’s work environment in order to make recommendations to help them manage a medical condition when at work. Workplace Support Programme – The programme is made up of an initial assessment of the employee at work lasting up to 1½ hours, followed by up to four workplace visits, lasting no more than 30 minutes each.The Occupational Therapist works with the employee and employer to develop a workplace support programme to help them perform their role. 

OHSAS Workplace visits
The programme assists people returning to work after an illness or injury, or those who are still at work but experiencing difficulties due to health problems. The type of workplace support provided includes:

1-  advice on workplace adjustments, modifications and equipment
2-  education and advice on the management of symptoms at work
3- education on safe and correct movement techniques and postures
4-  support to develop effective coping strategies for work
5-   follow-up with employee and employer to review and adjust the programme.

What is OHSAS 18001? 
OHSAS 18000 is an international occupational health and safety management system specification. It comprises two parts, 18001 and 18002 and embraces BS8800 and a number of other publications
Who Wrote It? 
OHSAS 18001 was created via a concerted effort from a number of the worlds leading national standards bodies, certification bodies, and specialist consultancies.
How Can it Help?
-OHSAS helps in a variety of respects... it helps: minimise risk to employees/etc; improve an existing OH&S management system; demonstrate diligence; gain assurance; etc.
