Kept himself busy by drawing, and used these drawings to make new friends when he returned to school
Later based his animal stories, such as Frog and Toad are Friends, etc., on these experiences

Attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York where he studied illustration
Eventually settled down in Brooklyn, and would visit Prospect Park Zoo with his family
Based the Mister Muster books on these trips
