THE EXTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
COMMUNICATE CLEARLY AND UNDERSTAND THE SITE MANAGER'S EXPECTATIONS!
Student was dismissed for not showing up.
There was confusion and mis-communication about the schedule resulting in the student not being there when expected!
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAILS AND FOLLOW POLICIES
Student was dismissed for endangering staff and self due to improper disposal of sharps resulting in a staff person getting a needle stick.
Student was dismissed for not following cell phone rules of the practice. Know and follow the rules of the practice. Turn OFF Your CELL PHONE DURING YOUR SHIFT!!!!
SHOW INTEREST AND ENTHUSIASM IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE JOB!!!!!
Student was dismissed due to poor attitude when asked to do things they did not care to do.
Be engaged, pro-active, look for things to do -
Do not wait to be told to do something!
USE PROFESSIONAL LANGUAGE AT ALL TIMES
Student was dismissed for not being respectful of cultural sensitivities and using inappropriate language.
Student was dismissed for not being cognizant of professional presentation and understanding its impression on others.
Student was dismissed for not being able to work well in a team and accept constructive criticism.
BE ON TIME AND RELIABLE
Student was dismissed for repeatedly arriving late or calling in sick.
Create a plan on how to address challenges (car troubles, sick children, snowdays, etc) that may arise during your externship.
Student was dismissed because they did not follow the required hygiene and cleanliness needed in a medical setting.
Do not arrive smelling of smoke. Be sure to wear freshly washed and pressed clothes. Be sure to pull long hair back and brush your teeth often.
