an African-American revolutionary organization established to promote Black Power, and by extension self-defense for blacks. It was active in the United States from the mid-1960s into the 1970s Founders:

HUEY NEWTON youngest child growing up in CA, poor but loving family.
went to poor high school, couldn't read (once said finishing Plato's Republic gave him incentive to be a leader.)
victim of segregation and discrimination. Teacher's said YOU CAN'T
Arrested many times as a teen for petty theft, weapon posession, vandalism. "Studied law to become a better burglar." To support himself.
Wanted to prove disbelievers wrong. Merit College- joined Afro-American Assoc. where he met Bobby. Studied Malcom X, Marx, Che Guevera.
jailed for 6 months for weapon at age 22 (solitary confinement).
