By: Sameera Hadjmohammadreza Light Skin vs. Dark Skin DEFINITION: Colorism “Dark skinned Blacks reported experiencing discrimination 11 times more often and appraised their experiences with discrimination as more stressful, as compared to light skinned Blacks” “Lighter complexioned Blacks and Mulattos were considered genetically superior to dark-skinned or Negroid-featured Blacks because light skin and Caucasoid features were seen by Whites as a sign of White ancestry” Dark Girls “Fair skin is an asset for African American girls and women because it is closer to the skin tone of White women, who are typically viewed as the standards of beauty” A Girl Like Me “In the 1950’s, black social scientist E. Franklin Frazier wrote, in a controversial study of the black middle class, that light-skinned blacks led a more privileged existence than dark-skinned blacks” Privileges In Conclusion...
