Option 1 On a PC
Press and hold alt key while typing the numbers on the number pad and release. Accented letter should appear.
Alt + 160 – á Alt + 130 – é Alt + 161 – í Alt + 162 – ó
Alt + 163 – ú Alt + 164 –ñ Alt + 129 – ü Alt + 168 - ¿
Alt + 166 – ª Alt + 126 - ~ Alt + 0193 – Á Alt + 144 – É
Alt + 0205 – Í Alt + 0211 – Ó Alt + 0218 – Ú Alt + 165 – Ñ

You can also use the button in the message box that looks like a button/key above the ? in the dialogue box where you can change the font and size. Or it might look like the omega sign Ω, next to the smiley face to insert special characters.

Other options
Do you have a hidden number pad on M, J, K, L, U, I, O, 7, 8, 9, keys? If so, with the number lock key on, hold down the Alt. key and type the necessary codes as stated in my post on how to create accent marks.

If typing in windows you can hold the ctrl key, hit the apostrophe key, let go and type the vowel. To get capital letter do the same but hold shift when typing vowel. For the ñ: hold ctrl, shift and the ~ button, then hit the n.

If you are using a laptop computer, you'll have to use the Fn key. If you hold down the alt key, hold the Fn key and type the number on the blue keys and then release all the keys, you'll get the accented character.

Option for MAC
Macintosh Option Codes for Spanish Character Description Acute Accent (e.g.Ó) Type Option+E, then the vowel. For instance, to type á hold down Option+E, then type lowercase A. To type Á, hold down Option+E, then type capital A.
Ñ,ñ Type Option+N, then either lowercase N for ñ or capital N for Ñ.

Ü, ü Type Option+U, then either lowercase U for ü or capital U for Ü.

º, ª Option+0 (Masculine Ordinal Number Marker)Option+9 (Feminine Ordinal Number Marker)

If you are using OS X (on a Mac), then all you need to do is press and hold the letter, and the operating system will present you with all possible choices for that letter.

Option 2 On a PC
Press the ALT key first, and hold it down while you type the number.
*Note: Use the Number pad located on the right hand side of the keyboard.
