Mindfulness At Work
Staff Wellness & Engagement Proposal
Presented by Dr. Deirdre Sugrue
Consultant Occupational Physician

What is Mindfulness?
The first stage of the proposed Mindfulness course will take place in February 2014 and will be taught by Mindfulness expert and experienced teacher ______. It will take approximately 5 days and all staff in UCHG will be given the opportunity and encouragement to attend.
Why do it at UCHG?
Increases productivity by avoiding 'continuous partial attention', thus improving employee performance.
Results in better patient care as relationships and emotions are more regulated and concentration is improved.
Ultimately improves well-being and happiness of both patients and staff.
On a par with some of the world’s most successful companies including Google, McKinsey, KPMG, Barclays, Apple, Yahoo, Nike, Ford, Sun Life Financial and Starbucks.
'Mindfulness' has been shown to have significant psychological and physiological benefits for employees when properly trained and practiced in its effective use in the workplace. There has been significant empirical research carried out in support of this and I believe it would be of great value and merit to the staff of the University College Hospital, Galway.
Why Mindfulness?
Abbott Ireland
Voted best place to work in 2013 after adopting their 'Live Life Well' initiative.

The initial stage of the course, to take place in February 2014, will cost €______. Funding for this part of the project has thus far been approved by ______. A further €______ would provide a substantial amount of well-needed training for other members of the staff including ______ and _____. The total cost of training, aiming to be completed by December 2014 would be €_____.

In 2012, Google adopted a mindfulness program to teach their employees to "search inside themselves", to "train your attention, develop self-knowledge and self-mastery, and create useful mental habits at work".
"Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.”
Interesting Facts
Although Mindfulness is now practiced independently of any Religion...
In a global context...
This programme 'inspires, engages and empowers employees to embrace a holistic approach to their physical and mental well-being.'
Entitled "Search Inside Yourself: The Unexpected Path to Achieving Success, Happiness (and World Peace)", Google still uses and believes in the practice of Mindfulness in all of their offices around the world.
