Place Value 3 Understanding that each place value position is ten times more than the place to its right. ____ ____ ____, ____ ____ ____, ____ ____ ____
Let's Review What we Know about Place Value. hundred millions ten millions millions hundred thousands ten thousands thousands hundreds tens ones Pull out unit cubes How many unit cubes = 1 tens rod? How many tens rods = a hundreds block? If you said 10, you are correct! How many hundreds blocks are in
a thousand cube? How many thousands are in 10,000? If you said 10, you are correct 10 10 How many ten thousands
are in 100,000? How many hundred thousands
are in a million? 10 10 again! Notice a pattern? Each time place value is ten times
the place value to its right How to Solve Place Value Problems Always start with your place value chart. Turn your sheet of loose leaf sideways.
Use the lines to help create a chart
to show place value. Remember, only one digit can fit in each box What happens if the problem has 23 tens?
Remember, 10 tens = 100.
Therefore, 20 tens = 200
3 tens= 30.
23 tens = 230 What would 48 tens be equivalent to? Remember 10 tens =100
Therefore 40 tens = 400
8 tens = 80
400 +80 =480.
48 tens = 480 What would 12 hundreds be equivalent to? Remember 10 hundreds =1,000
2 hundreds = 200
1,000 +200 =1,200 What is 32 hundreds? 10 hundreds = 1,000
30 hundreds = 3,000
2 hundreds = 200
3,000 + 200 = 3,200 What is 78 hundreds equivalent to?

10 hundreds = 1,000
70 hundreds = 7,000
8 hundreds = 800
7,000 + 800 = 7,800 What is 108 tens equivalent to?

10 tens =100
In other words 108 tens is the same as saying:

10 tens + 10 tens +10 tens + 10 tens + 10 tens + 10 tens +10 tens + 10 tens + 10 tens + 10 tens + 8 tens

Replace each 10 tens with 100

100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 8 tens

10 hundreds = 1,000
8 tens = 80
1,000 + 80 = 1,080 Now you try:
Look at what we just did.
Look at your place value chart.

What just happened? Each place value is 10 times greater than the value to its right. Listen carefully! It is a great review! Watch This Video!! http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/math/numbers/place-value.htm 1. What is the value of 38 hundreds?
