Transcript of Equations and real life contexts

Equations and real life contexts
Starter
I think of a number.
I times it by 5 and add 4.
The answer I get is 20.
Work out the number I was thinking of.
Example
Example
Tim is x years old. Josie is 4 years older than Tim. Shereen is twice as old as Josie. When they add their ages together, their answer is 18. Work out how old they each are.
L.O. - Set up and solve equations from 'real-life' contexts.
Starter
I think of a number.
I times it by 5 and add 4.
The answer I get is 20.
Work out the number I was thinking of.
5x + 4 = 20
5x = 16
x = 3.2
Example
Tim is x years old. Josie is 4 years older than Tim. Shereen is twice as old as Josie. When they add their ages together, their answer is 18. Work out how old they each are.
Tim = x
Josie = x + 4
Shereen = 2x + 8

x + x + 4 + 2x + 8 = 4x + 12.
4x+ 12 = 18
4x = 6
x = 1.5
Tim = 1.5 years old
Josie = 5.5 years old
Shereen = 11 years old.
Example
(a) 2x - 3
(b) x + 13 = 2x - 3
(c) x = 16, so Paula got 32, and Jill got 19.
