Description of a buffer solution A system that minimises pH changes on addition of small amounts of an acid or base How can it be prepared ? A buffer solution can be made from a weak acid and a salt of the weak acid. How does it work ? Examples of buffer solutions are Addition of an acid Addition of an alkali Effective buffering pH values close to pKa values pH 5.05 Formulae for buffer pH is Excess latic acid is removed by the hydrogencarbonate buffer present in the blood.
The excess acid is removed by the kidneys releasing the hydrogencarbonate ions to act as a buffer once again.
