Brackish Water Ecosystem
Transcript of Brackish Water Ecosystem
By: Lindsay C.
Brackish water temperature in the summer is very warm. Temperatures vary from around 81 degrees to 88 degrees.
Mangroves live life on the edge with
one half on land and one half in their
muddy and salty brackish water.
Marshes are known as wetlands with muddy and flooded grounds. Marshes also have very salty
What is brackish water?
Brackish water is created when saltwater from an ocean flows into freshwater such as
lakes, rivers, and streams.
Brackish water is found in many places like, on the coast of Florida, Mexico, and Central America.
Where are they?

How much salinity?
Brackish water contains more salt water than fresh water.
Brackish water in the winter can be
very cold. Temperatures vary from around 60 to 66 degrees.
Salt grass : The salt grass is a grass that is a yellowish green color, grows in salt marshes, and can grow to be 50 centimeters tall.
Algae : A slimy green organism that grows in
Moss : A fluffy piece of grass that grows in muddy areas.
Pickle weed : The pickle weed is in close proximity to saltwater from the San Francisco Bay, and also has the tendency to turn red as it absorbs saltwater.
Alkali heath : The alkali heath is a pinkish purple flower that can grow to be 38 centimeters high, and like the pickle weed it absorbs the brackish water`s salt.
-Currently brackish water is
becoming less populated because of the oceans oil spills.
-The oil flows into the freshwater and it kills many animals and plants. Plants and animals are the main resources that keep the brackish waters clean.
Pictures of polluted brackish water areas!!!
Stickle back- A small brownish color fish that lives in streams, rivers, and lakes (usually only 4 to 5 and a half inches long).
Oyster-A soft piece of meat covered by a hard shell that is a part of the shellfish species. The oysters in the brackish water feed on moss and other particles floating around. Oysters can vary in colors from light grey to dark brown.
Crane- A crane is a large bird with long legs and a long neck. The height of a crane can range from 3 to 5 feet tall. They feed on things as small as berries to things as big as frogs, fish, and snakes.
Borneo river sharks: Can grow up to 78 centimeters long and travel all along river banks.
Ganges river sharks: An endangered species of Australian river shark that travels to saltwater to reproduce, and when grown they can vary in size from 5ft to 6ft long.
Speartooth- The speartooth river shark is a very endangered brackish water shark that can grow from 6 to 10 feet long!!! They feed on coconuts and medium sized fish.

What is interesting to me?
-I chose the brackish water ecosystem because I love both fresh water and salt water animals and plants.
-I also didn't know a lot about this ecosystem, so it was a fun thing to to learn about.
