Water Pollution
By: Helen Kontopanos

What is it?
Water pollution is any contamination of water with chemicals or other foreign substances that are detrimental to human, plant, or animal health ("National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.")
What causes it?
Many things cause water pollution.
The dangerous chemicals found in laundry detergents are released into the environment.
What else causes it?
Radioactive wastes.
Lead, mercury, and other heavy metals.
Chemical wastes from industrialization and chemical contamination from waste sites.
What else causes it?
Transportation (oil and gasoline spills on the road eventually may lead to a water source).
Drainage pipes from factories, exhaust fumes, and leaky underground gasoline tanks.
What else causes it?
Cleaning products.
Simply dumping garbage and trash into the ocean.
What are the effects?
Laundry detergents contaminate the drinking water.
Marine animals like seals, sea turtles, birds, and fish can be wounded, strangled, or unable to swim if they consume or become entangled in garbage.
More effects...
It kills aquatic plants and animals.
Pollution in fish and shellfish (such as mercury) can be harmful to humans.
More effects...
Acid rain dissolves aluminum, causing it to run into lakes and rivers.
Nutrients cause problems: nitrogen and phosphorus make algae overgrow.
More effects...
Oil spills can kill marine life in masses and can remain on beaches for a long time.
The oil can cause birds to become flightless, because the oil coats their wings.
More effects...
Oil spills can also make some areas on the waterfront uninhabitable
Water contaminated by certain metals can cause cancer, since those metals are carcinogenic and can damage organs.
What services help prevent water pollution?
Water systems are used to reduce acidity levels in water.
The Environmental Protection Agency regulates pollution by enforcing laws to prevent it.
The U.S. Department of the Interior solves water supply issues.
What can we do?
Use more ecologically friendly chemicals/products.
Don't pour household products down the drain.
Clean up after pets.
Dispose of trash properly.
Recycle.
What else causes it?

The burning of fossil fuels releases harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide into the air, which eventually is absorbed into oceans, rivers and lakes.
What else causes it?
Washing automobiles
Fertilizers and pesticides from agricultural runoff flow into waterways.
Sewage ends up in our oceans and rivers.
More effects...
Water pollution makes water undrinkable.
The fishing industry also weakens.
It threatens crops, too.
Water pollution can alter the pH level which can cause fish eggs to not hatch.
Untreated sewage contains disease-causing organisms (bacteria) which pose a threat to animals and humans.
