Reading Approach Presentation:
Fountas & Pinnell
Guided Reading

Gradient of Text: a tool utilized by Fountas and Pinnell to determine the level of complexity of a text. The levels in the F&P Text Level Gradient are based on 10 text factors:
Genre/Form Sentence Complexity
Text Structure Vocabulary
Content Words
Themes and Ideas Illustrations
Language and Literary Function Book and Print Features
The assessor reads a standardized introduction.
What is the Goal of
the Assessment?
The student reads orally a leveled text
while the assessor observes, codes and analyzes reading behavior.
As an option, the assessor may have student write to a prompt to provide further information about comprehension.
The assessor scores accuracy, fluency and comprehension.
Irene Fountas and Gay Pinnell--leading voices in guided reading.
Guided Reading is a teaching approach designed to help individual readers build an effective system for processing a variety of increasing challenging texts over time.
F&P's work is rooted in the research of Marie Clay who believed:
-when a text is too difficult for a child the process breaks down and the child does not develop inner control of effective actions for processing texts.

The assessor and student engage in conversation about
the book (assessing comprehension level).
Goal:
To estimate students' reading levels in order to provide appropriate instruction. It measures decoding, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.

How to Determine a Student's Text Reading Level:
Based on these scores,
the student's instructional,
independent and placement level for small group instruction is determined.

Current Research & Evaluation:
-After 2 1/2 years of editorial development, field testing and independent data analysis, the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System texts were demonstrated to be both reliable and valid measures for assessing students' reading levels.
-Article-"Guided Reading: The Romance and the Reality"--the excited romance with guided reading today is well under way but the reality is that there is still excited professional learning to do.
How Does the System Work?
Teacher uses benchmark assessments to determine approximate instructional reading level of each student--it is essential to match books to readers.
Purpose of determining reading levels:
-informing reading instruction
-documenting reading progress
When the text poses enough challenge, but not too much, the child has the opportunity with support from the teacher to build his network of effective problem solving actions.
System spans from K-8th grade and is aligned with A to Z fiction and nonfiction book levels using the text level gradient ("ladder of progress").
