By: Zach and Brad What is a CT Scan? A Computerized Tomography Scan, more commonly known as a CT or CAT Scan, is a medical test that uses a series of x-ray photographs taken at different angles that are combined to project accurate 3D images of the bones and soft tissue in your body.
Doctors mostly use it to diagnose cancers, find tumors, identify internal bleeding, and find out information about the brain as well as common injuries like broken bones. History Of The CT Scan CT was invented by a British engineer named Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and Dr. Alan Cormack. CT scanners first began to be used in 1974. Currently, approximately 6,000 or more scanners are in use in the United States. This allows you to see all the bones and tissues because some get covered up by bigger bones and tissues in a 2D x-ray A CT scan uses small amounts of radiation that can kill some cells inside of your body, however, it has a small chance of increasing your risk of cancer. In an x-ray exam, a small amount of radiation is aimed at the body. With CT scanning, numerous x-ray beams rotate around you, measuring the amount of radiation being absorbed throughout your body. They are quick and accurate. Do not eat or drink for 4 hours before you arrive for your scan. If you have diabetes, it is recommended to do your CT scan in the morning because BPM's are at their lowest when you first wake up. 1 CT head scan = 30 chest x-rays

The radiation from a CT Scan comes from the x-rays which are basically supercharged light photons (beams of light) that pass through the tissue in your body and record an image.
A normal photon cannot do this because the increased amounts of energy in an x-ray allows the rays to pass through. Small risk of cancer can be caused due to the exposure of radiation from the CT Scan. Risks:
