Transcript of AP: Mongols Meet Friends!
AP: Mongols and Friends!
Just for review!
-Conquer and unite China during Song Dynasty (Mandate of Heaven? Maybe) bringing North and South together
-New Dynasty! Yuan! Yay!
-Capital in Beijing! New city! Yay!
How did they...rule?
-Benevolent or tyrants? Kind of...depends
-Do integrate Chinese knowledge of bureaucracy.
-Kublai Khan (Genghis' Grandson) builds canals, lowers, taxes, limited torture, protected rights of peasants, etc
-Buddhism, Doaism, Confucianism- Mongol's dont care, even build some temples to make people happy.
Bad Stuff (if you're Chinese)
-Marco Polo said Chinese "treated like slaves" (Mongols required bribes, executed people for fun, handsy with Chinese ladies)
-Still living in tents (why?)
-No academy system! Mostly Mongols and foreigners officiating (Muslims)
-THEY EVEN SUPPORT MERCHANTS AND GIVE WOMEN MORE RIGHTS
-Doesn't even last a hundred years (1271-1368)
-Kublai's death, Plague, famine, growing prices, and peasant revolts weaken Mongol rule
-By 1368, peasant revolts (Red Turban Rebellion) push Mongols out of China back to Mongolia, where they remain a small threat
-First attacked by Genghis, later by those that followed
-Mongol victories shatter Islamic worldview (why?)
-Baghdad sacked in 1258. 200,000 citizens massacred
-ISLAMIC GOLDEN AGE? OVER. MONGOLS BROKE IT
-Heavy taxes and brutal punishments
-Transform agricultural land into pasture for their horses, causing famine, totally ignore irrigation upkeep
-Mongols do end up becoming Muslims, however, and over time simply integrate into Persian society.
-Invaded by "Golden Horde" of Mongol and Turkic peoples
-They invade, but don't really "occupy." They leave cities alone and just hand out on the steppe, requiring tribute
-Since Russia was so poor, Mongols felt no need to actually "rule"
Impact on Russia
-Russians adapted Mongol tech
-Eastern Europe gains connection to far East due to Silk Road under Mongol control
-Eastern Orthodox Church strengthened to due Mongol religious tolerance
-Moscow, the central location where Mongols collected tribute, grows in importance and Kiev weakens
-Mongol rule brief, but heavily impacted many cultures
-Plague and resistance ends occupation, but influence lingers
