Time,"Divine Nine" and the Cosmos
n this installation of the series on
Celestia Mathmatica
, we’ll explore the concept of “9” and it’s fundamental place in the foundation of astrology. According to Pythagoras, “all is number” and numbers are an inherent part of the Universe. The studies of astronomy, astrology, music and mathematics developed simultaneously as the patterns of nature were being revealed. Understanding how we mark both the celestial divisions and divide time is a crucial key to the hidden wisdom that lay at the very heart of sacred geometry, quantum mechanics and astrology. At the root of the divine symmetry of the cosmos we will always find the principle of 9.
R.L. Ohlhausen
Russell has practiced Western astrology and metaphysics for 15 years. As a writer and researcher, his work reflects a longtime study of astrological systems, science, religion and myth—and what they reveal about the nature of human consciousness. In former lives he studied history and psychology at Texas A&M at Navarro, served in the U.S. Navy, volunteered at orphanages and youth organizations in various parts of Asia, and worked as a architectural designer for sustainable homes here in Austin, where he currently resides. He is also the creator of the Zodiac Project dedicated to preserving images of zodialogical architecture and art.

The Muses
and the Nine Gates of Inspiration
The 12 signs divide the zodiacal year by 12, the Gates of Inspiration divide the zodiacal year by
. The 12 division is solar / yang, the 9 division is lunar / yin. The Gates of Inspiration were personified in ancient Greece by the Nine Muses and in Egypt by the Ennead, a circle of 9 deities. The Muses also represent the nine personality types defined by the enneagram.

THE ARIES GATE-Vernal Equinox
Music of the Spheres Franchino Gafurius Florence 1496

The allegorical diagram "Music of the Spheres" was published in 1496 as the frontispiece of the renaissance artist Francinus Gafurius's Practica Musica. The Muses appear in a zodiacally ordered ascending series at the left of the drawing. In Gafurius's design, the symbolized stages of the transformations of consciousness that follow are represented metaphorically as under inspiration of the Muses graded in relation to the hierarchy of the ptolemaic order of the spheres. Immediately with the recognition of the instant "HERE AND NOW" nocturnal silence of a wasteland of dust and toil becomes eloquent of a universal joy.

Its Form
The number "9" is the last number of the base 10 system. The digit, place or concept of the number nine is both the "end" and "beginning". It has man qualities that the other numbers do not have.
If you are the type of person that thinks numbers are arbitrary and that
just another digit in an endless numbering system you may be in for a surprise....

Nine Gates
are portals for shamanic journeying represented by 'the Nine Lords of Time' in the Mayans' Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque. Interred here was the mythic Mayan leader Pocal Wotan. The lid of his sarcophagus (illustrated above) depicts an initiate ascending the World Tree.
Pocal Wotan
is the Norse
Odin or Woden
(Manly P. Hall, Secret Teachings of All Ages). Odin hangs suspended from the World Tree at the top of the world for Nine Days to receive the mystery of the runes. These nine portal dates are symbolized by the Nine Lords of Time.

These 9 are also symbolized by the 9 chevrons around the Star Portal in the popular TV series Star Gate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.)

*There are also Nine in the Fellowship of the Ring and Nine Ring Wraiths, their shadows. The spiritual capital of the human kingdom is called the White City. This is another name for Shamballa, an etheric city where dwell the world's spirit elders, keepers of the ancient wisdom. Shamballa is located at the north polar center, the nexus of the Nine Gates in the Earth Zodiac. A group of Nine is needed to link in consciousness with Shamballa. The power of three dispels astral shadows, nine are needed to channel the energy of Shamballa. The ring of autocratic power is cast into the fire from the circle of nine.

First point (or cusp) of

are names formerly used by astronomers and now used by navigators and astrologers. Navigational ephemeris tables record the geographic position of the First Point of Aries as the reference for position of navigational stars. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, the astrological signs of the tropical zodiac where these equinoxes are located no longer correspond with the actual constellations once ascribed to them. The equinoxes are currently in the constellations of
. In sidereal astrology (notably Hindu astrology), by contrast, the first point of Aries remains aligned with Ras Hammel "the head of the ram", i.e. the Aries constellation.
The word itself has several related definitions. The word equinox is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night). The equinox is not exactly the same as the day when period of daytime and night are of equal length for two reasons. "Sunrise" technically occurs when the top of the Sun's disk rises above the Eastern Horizon. At that instant, the Sun's center point is still well below the horizon. Also, Earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight. As a result, an observer sees daylight before the first glimpse of the Sun's disk above the horizon. To avoid this ambiguity, the word

is sometimes used to mean a day on which the periods of daylight and night are equal

As human beings we are bound in the field of TIME!
Shiva as Nataraja
Two contrasting viewpoints on time divide many prominent philosophers. One view is that time is part of the fundamental structure of the universe – a dimension independent of events, in which events occur in sequence. Sir Isaac Newton subscribed to this realist view, and hence it is sometimes referred to as
Newtonian time
. The opposing view is that time does not refer to any kind of "container" that events and objects "move through", nor to any entity that "flows", but that it is instead part of a fundamental intellectual structure (together with space and number) within which humans sequence and compare events. This second view, in the tradition of
Gottfried Leibniz
Immanuel Kant
, holds that time is neither an event nor a thing, and thus is not itself measurable nor can it be travelled.
Time is a dimension in which events can be ordered from the past through the present into the future and also the measure of durations of events and the intervals between them.
Ideas about the Arrow of TIME....
The depiction of Shiva as Nataraja Sanskrit: naṭarāja, "Lord of Dance") is popular. The names Nartaka ("dancer") and Nityanarta ("eternal dancer").
A cobra uncoils from his lower right forearm, and the crescent moon and a skull are on his crest. This dance is called the Dance of Bliss.
The upper right hand holds a small drum shaped like an hourglass.A specific hand gesture (mudra) called ḍamaru-hasta is used to hold the drum. It symbolizes sound originating creation or the beat of the drum is the passage of time.
The upper left hand contains fire, which signifies destruction. The opposing concepts in the upper hands show the counterpoise of creation and destruction or the fire of life.
The second right hand shows the Abhaya mudra (meaning fearlessness, bestowing protection from both evil and ignorance to those who understand dharma.
The second left hand points towards the raised foot which signifies liberation. It also points to the left foot with the sign of the elephant which leads the way through the jungle of ignorance.
The dwarf on which Nataraja dances is the demon or humaan Apasmara (Muyalaka), which symbolises Shiva's victory over ignorance.
As the Lord of Dance, Nataraja, Shiva performs the tandava, the dance in which the universe is created, maintained, and dissolved. Shiva's long, matted tresses, usually piled up in a knot, loosen during the dance and crash into the heavenly bodies, knocking them off course or destroying them utterly.
The surrounding flames represent the manifest Universe and the wheel of time.
The snake swirling around his waist is kundalini, the Shakti or divine force thought to reside within everything. This also parallels the cords of life worn by the Brahmins to represent the second rebirth.
The stoic face of Shiva represents his neutrality, thus being in balance.

This symbolic work is essentially the same as the Shiva in the Dance image. The basic symbligy is consistent throughout many works of these periods
