Descriptive Lines
Describe what we are seeing.
Outlines
A line that surrounds a shape.
Contour Lines
Define the outer edges of a shape, BUT vary in thickness
Individual Lines
Can describe an entire shape.
Hatching
Shading using parallel lines to suggest light and shadow.
Crosshatching
Hatch lines that cross & make a more solid shadow.
Implied Lines
Lines that are indicated by....
Edges
Where one shape ends & another begins.
Closure
Our tendency to "see" complete figures where lines are often left open.
Lines of Sight
Lines along which people look or point, or arrows.
Expressive Lines
Produced to express an idea, mood, or quality (ex: graceful, nervous, delicate, aggressive, etc.)

Abstract Lines
Not meant to look like anything real. Meant only to be viewed as lines.
