Compounds
Mixtures

A molecule is a group of atoms joined together. It is the smallest particle of an element or compound that can exist independently
H2
O2
H2O
A compound is a substance that is made up of two or more different elements combined together chemically
Water
Salt
Sand
Sugar
lime
The property of compounds usually differ completely from those of the elements from which they were made e.g NaCl, CO2, MgO, Fes
In compounds the elements are present in fixed ratio by number e.g. H2O (2:1), CO2 (1:2)
A mixture consists of two or more different substances mingled with each other but not chemically combined
Air
Sea water
Crude oil
Petrol
salad dressing
toothpaste
concrete
But salt in water is a mixture e.g. sea water
separation techniques for mixtures
filtration
distilation
evaporation
chromatography
All compounds are molecules
but not all molecules are compounds as compounds require at least 2 different elements in them.
