Transcript of Elements and Compounds

Elements and Compounds!!! Elements An element is a pure substance that is used to make a compound. Elements cannot be broken or separated into any other individual
pure substances. Examples include:
aluminum, iron, and chlorine. Compounds A compound is a substance that is made up of 2 or more elements that have been merged in a chemical change. For example, salt is a compound that contains chlorine and sodium. Salt Now we are going to
talk about the relationships between the following terms
Atoms & Molecules
Elements & Compounds
Atoms & Elements Atoms & Molecules Atoms make up molecules. You need at least 2 atoms to make up a molecule. 2 oxygen atoms will make 1 oxygen molecule and 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom will make 1 molecule of water. Atoms are the smallest component of an element and molecules are the smallest component of a compound. Molecules A molecule is formed when 2 or more atoms are linked together. A water molecule contains 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. This is why water can also be written as H20. Interestingly, a chemical change can break apart a water molecule which will split into hydrogen and oxygen. Gold (Au) Atomic # : 79 Oxygen Hydrogen Hydrogen Atoms An atom is a fundamental piece of matter. An atom itself is made up of 3 tiny kinds of particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and neutrons make up the center of the atom called the nucleus and the electrons fly around above the nucleus in a small cloud. The electrons carry a negative charge and the protons carry a positive charge. In a normal atom the number of protons and the number of electrons are equal. Often, but not always, the number of neutrons is the same. Electrons Neutrons Protons Water Molecule Elements and Compounds Element is any pure substance contained one type of atom, and compounds are substances contained two or more different elements. The size and charge of the elements have a big impact on the physical and chemical properties of the compound. Atoms and Elements Elements are pure substances that are made up of atoms. It has the same characteristics as the atom that it is made up of. There is a corresponding atom for each element. It is then essential to state, each element is made up of certain atoms that give it its unique characteristic.
