The Spanish Inquisition
Catholic Monarchs, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile
Approval of Pope Sixtus IV

Tomas de Torquemada: General hired by Queen who was responsible for the death of thousands of Jews and suspected witches during the Spanish Inquisition
Spanish Inquisition - an inquisition initiated in 1478 by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella that guarded the orthodoxy of Catholicism in Spain (especially from the 15th to the 17th centuries); "the Spanish Inquisition was administered by both civil and church authorities which gave it ultimate power"; "Torquemada was the inquisitor general for the Spanish Inquisition" (www.thefreedictionary.com, 3/31/14).

The Spanish Inquisition occurred because Christian rulers Isabella and Ferdinand were determined to rid Spain of any non-Christians
Political and religious reasons
The government made profit from taking away the property of people found guilty of heresy (belief contrary to those of Christianity [money was a motive])
Jews, Muslims, Protestants, Lutherans, and overall heretics would convert so they would not be killed
They were still targeted in the Inquisition, because they could be accused of "secret practices"
