Transcript of Realia Teaching Strategy

Using real objects in your classroom Realia Teaching Strategy What is the Realia Strategy? Realia is when the teacher uses real life objects in their lesson to make the learning experience more memorable for the learner. Steps for using Realia 1. Use objects relating to lesson. Ex: Introducing Greece by passing around a Greek flag, a map of Greece, and photographs! 2. Plan time in your lesson for students to physically hold the objects, practice using them (read a map), closely observe them (ex-examine different coins), and role play (playing store with real currency) This helps ELL students make a connection with the vocabulary they are learning and the physical object that they are holding. Using Realia in Art Classrooms Studio Example: Teachers can pass out materials that they are introducing to their students to use.

Warning: Don't just pass out materials to every student during the introduction. They will have the material everywhere before a word is said

A good idea is to have an individual student try the medium as it is introduced. Art History Example: Teachers can take students on virtual tours through museums that include historical artists and their work. http://www.vatican.va/various/cappelle/sistina_vr/index.html References -Sheltered Content Instruction. 4th Edition.
