Waray Lyric Poems
Kun harapit na matunod
Kinabuhi ko humungko;
Hin-o daw la ha kagiliran
Han higdaan ko mapungko?

Kun ako maghingutas na,
Inen kamot ikukurug;
Hin-o daw la in makarawat
Nga may' ha ak' pagpaurog?
Mga mata nga mag lubog
Kun dulman na han kamatayon,
Hin-o daw la han mga pirok
In magpipiyong hin dayon?

Ngan pagtuktuk han lingganay,
(Kun tumuktuk man ugaring)
Hin-o daw la hin pangadi-on
Ha akon mahoring?

Kun dat-ugan na ine nga lawas
Hin bato nga mabanges;
Ha bawbaw han ak' lubnganan
Hin-o daw la in magtatangis?

Pagsirak liwat han adlaw,
Pagwara han kadalumdum;
Hin-o daw la in may' kahidlaw
Nga ha akon manunumdum?
Sad Thoughts
Translation:
When almost at its setting
My life starts to ebb
Who by the side of my bed
Will be seated?

When as I am dying
My hand trembles
Who will take it in his
Will tender love for me?

When my cloudy eyes
Are shadowed by my death
Who will my eyelids
Press forever close?

And when the bell tolls
(If toll it does)
Who will a prayer
Whisper in my ears?
When over my body
Cruel stones are pressed
Who, over my tomb,
Will weep?

And when the sun rises
To banish the gloom
Who will with longing be filled
When he remembers me?
Panhayhay Hin Duminagat
Kamakalilipay pag sinakaysakay,
Ha bawbaw han dagat pag binurobugsay,
Hangad man ha langit nga kapin kalunsay
Bulan, kabitun-an nga mga magbaysay

Huyohoy san hangin hinay ngan mabugnaw.
Harayo an bukid ha lawod pag tan-aw,
Kun didi ha dagat hi ako maanaw,
Ayaw ika bido, ayaw ika mingaw,
Ha imo, Gino-o, akon itutubyan-
Inin kinabuhi, an kalag sugad man,
Ngan ha pagkaturog imo pagbantayan,
Inin paragkawil, ug iya sakayan.
An ak' pangabuhi ka makalolo-oy!,
Hinin kakablasan sagni pag linangoy,
Urog an pagkaon nga bunga hin kahoy,
Inin ak' kasugad di' sadang ig-asoy.
Kon damo nga isda in akon hidakpan,
Balyo hin karan-on, hin kuarta ha sawang
Dako nga kalipay binate ha dughan,
Kan Bathala hatag. Pag ampo di' kawang.

Translation:
Reflections Of a Fisherman
What a joy it is to be sailing
To be paddling over the sea
To look up at the sky so clear
And see the beauty of moon and star.

The wind's breath is gentle and cool
The hills from here look far away
If I should disappear at sea
Grieve not, long not for me/
To You, Lord, I entrust
My life and also my soul
And in his sleep keep watch
Over this fisherman and his boat.

Humble is my calling
In poverty I ever wallow
Fruits are often all I have to eat--
Indeed, my distress does not bear
telling
.
When plenty of fish I catch
To exchange in town for food, for cash
Great joy I feel in my heart--
It is God's gift. My prayers He hears.

Literature in Eastern Visayas
With the organization of the Sanghiran San Binisaya in 1909, writers as well as the illustrados in the community banded together for the purpose of cultivating the Waray language. Under the leadership of Norberto Romualdez Sr, Sanghiran’s members had literary luminaries that included Iluminado Lucente, Casiano Trinchera, Eduardo Makabenta, Francisco Alvarado, Juan Ricacho, Francisco Infectana, Espiridion Brillo, and statesman Jaime C. de Veyra. For a time, Sanghiran was responsible for the impetus it gave to new writing in the language.
The period 1900 to the late fifties witnessed the finest Waray poems of Casiano Trinchera, Iluminado Lucente, Eduardo Makabenta, and the emergence of the poetry of Agustin El O’Mora, Pablo Rebadulla, Tomas Gomez Jr., Filomeno Quimbo Singzon, Pedro Separa, Francisco Aurillo, and Eleuterio Ramoo. Trinchera, Lucente, and Makabenta were particularly at their best when they wrote satirical poetry.
