About 70,000-100,000 Americans are affected by Sickle Cell Disease.
Sickle Cell Disease is NOT a sex-linked trait
The disease is inhereted by a recessive allele
Affects of Sickle Cell Disease on a Child
A child with the disease will need to get regular check ups at the doctor and get blood tests.
Parents of the children who have the disease need to keep close watch of them because they could have a stroke and even die.
The long term outlook for the child is it might effects the child's internal organs.
Current Research
St. Jude Hospital has been researching Sickle Cell Disease since it opened in 1962.
There is already a cure for SCD, but there is NO cure coming soon.
Facts:
People with the disease can have children.
There children can only be effected if there parents are a carrier an the child receive 2 reccesive alleles of that disease.
