Transcript of Integrated Pest Management

Where can IPM be used?
IPM can be used in a wide variety of situations, for example

If a garden is infested by flies,

If the major crop on a farm is being destroyed by wilt virus,

If ants and cockroaches infest a school!
Integrated Pest Management
Thank You for Listening!

Integrating various forms of pest control to bring the number of pests to an acceptable level.

This includes...

Why is 'IPM' Important?
Integrated Pest management is extremely important as it is a sustainable method of maximising the productivity of agriculture.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Pests - The Root of the Problem
Pests - organism with characteristics that people see as damaging or unwanted
Agriculture grew to such a large scale that physically removing pests became unfeasible - this led to the development of pesticides
Eventually after intensive use of pesticides many (important) pest populations became resistant to many pesticides
This led to the development of Integrated Pest Mangement (IPM)
By Gopika & Rhoda
How IPM works
Identify the pest.
Learn about the pest's biology
(habits, life cycle, needs and
Take steps to exclude the pest
from the area,
Try to remove the pest's food,
water and shelter
Determine the pest's travel
patterns and find their home-base
Identify all of your control
options before acting
The advantages of IPM are mainly that it is much more environmentally sustainable and still extremely efficient.
Whereas the disadvantages are that it can be costly and time consuming
Therefore the advantages of IPM far outweigh the disadvantages.
Cultural Control
Agricultural practices that make the environment less favourable to insect pests.

Mechanical Control
The use of physical barriers such as row covers or trenches prevents insects from reaching the crop.
Biological Control
These methods usually do not have toxic effects or leave persistent chemical residues in the environment

Chemical Control

The use of reduced-risk chemically-based pesticides such as herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides.
