Transcript of Rick Riordan - Author Research

Born: June 5th, 1964 Still alive "It's not a bad thing to be different. Sometimes, it's the mark of being very, very talented." Personal Information Early Life Education and Work Experience, Continued Writing Career Education and Work experience Writing Career, continued -Rick Riordan Full name: Richard 'Rick' Russell Riordan, Jr. As a child, Rick thought books were tedious, boring, and a waste of his time. Went to Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio He happily continued to write his adult books , the 'Tres Naverre' series, while teaching . Currently lives in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife(I think her name is Becky) and 2 sons, Haley and Patrick. Likes to read, swim, play guitar, and travel with his family. Rick also likes to play video games with his sons, particularly World of Warcraft. Didn't get into reading until middle school; the first book he remembers reading for fun is the 'Lord of the Rings 'series. Also liked Greek and Norse mythology as a kid Started college at North State Texas because he wanted to be a guitar player and they had a great music program, then transferred to University of Texas in Austin. Rick graduated with a double major in English and history, and became a teacher. While in college, he worked for 3 years at a summer camp, Camp Capers. He got the idea for Camp Half-Blood, a major setting in his 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' series, here. First taught middle school in New Braunfels, Texas, then moved to San Fransisco and taught at Presidio Middle School for 8 years. Then he and his family moved back to San Antonio, where he taught for 6 years, then became a full time writer. Wrote a lot of short stories when he was young and even tried to get some published; they all were rejected. When in high school, Rick worked as an editor for the school news paper. Also, he even got in trouble for writing an underground news paper that made fun of the school, particularly the failing football team.( The football team later egged his car.) While living in San Fransisco, Rick began to miss Texas. He read a lot of mystery books in his spare time, and he decided to write a private eye novel set in San Antonio, his hometown. Ten months later, his 1st book, 'Big Red Tequila' was finished. This began his career of writing adult novels. His most popular series, 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians', started as a bedtime story for Rick's son, Haley. Recently diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, Haley was having trouble in school. Rick discovered his son had an interest in Greek mythology and began telling the myths to his son as bedtime stories. When Rick ran out of myths to tell, Haley asked him to make up some more. Rick began to tell of Percy Jackson, a modern demigod son of Poseidon trying to find Zeus' stolen lightning bolt in modern America. It took 3 nights to tell. When it was finished, Haley said Rick should write it down as a book. He did. Rick made Percy Jackson have ADHD and dyslexia like Haley. Writing Career, still continued After a while, Rick realized he would now have to write 2 books a year-1 adult novel and 1 kid novel. He didn't think he could manage that and do a good job in the classroom, so he reluctantly left the classroom and became a full-time writer. Awards While he was a teacher, Rick received a Master Teacher Award. In high school, while he was an editor for the school news paper, he won third place in the state for UIL featured writing. He won an Anthony award for Best Original Paperback(1997) Children's Choice Book award (2011) Just to name a few Books Adult The 'Tres Navarre' mystery series Kids The 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' series The 'Heroes of Olympus' series The 'Kane Chronicles' A few '39 Clues' books RICK RIORDAN By Molly Malone He has 2 cats and 1 dog A picture of Rick Riordan Cover for 'The Lightning Thief' Cover of 'The Lost Hero' Cover for 'The Red Pyramid' Logo for'The Heroes of Olympus' series Logo for 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Logo for the 'Kane Chronicles'
