Should College Athletes be Paid?
Tip of the Iceberg
College Athletes should get paid, it's more beneficial!
Background Information.
The topic is on whether or not college athletes should be paid. Like any other story, there is two sides to it. One side of the argument is that college athletes shouldn't be paid because they already get a scholarship. Others say that college athletes should be paid because most of them can't afford to buy things because they can't get a job.
First Reason.
The reason why I think that college athletes should get paid is because even though they get their education paid for, the students might be living in poverty so they wont be able to afford things, also because they can't get a job because of the constant training. The author of, "College athletes should not get paid for playing", stated, "Many athletes argue that because they do not have time to get a job, they should be paid by the university and have extra money to go out with friends or afford new clothes." This quote proves that students themselves testify that they don't have enough money.
Second Reason.
Another reason why I think college athletes should get paid is because the coaches get a lot of money from selling tickets. The only reason why coaches sell tickets is because people want to go see the players play. So, long story short, the coaches are getting rich because of the players, so the players should at least get payed a little bit. The author of, " College athletes should be paid", states, "They are selling our jerseys with our numbers and making money off of ticket sales, so I think college athletes should get paid." This quote proves my point of why college athletes should be paid.
Third Reason.
The final reason why I think college athletes should get paid is because some athletes have to take care of a family. If they spend all of their time training, they can't get a job, and then they aren't even getting paid for training everyday on their free-time so it becomes a constant struggle to get by. The author of, "College athletes should be paid", states, "Yes. Having to take care of my family, it would have made a difference if I'd have gotten paid". This quote proves that some people have a family to take care of and that is the coaches would of payed them it would've been easier to handle.
Counter Example
Although I think college athletes should be paid, there is some reasonable counter-arguments that can get you thinking. One argument is that college athletes don't get paid but if they make it to pro, then they will get a lot of money. This would be a valid argument, but there are some college athletes who don't make it to pro, and either all of their time is wasted, or they get so much money from loans that they go into life in debt.
Analogy
College athletes are like slaves, because they work for a long time and don't get paid anything, while the owner(coach) makes money off of their accomplishments.
Call to Action
College athletes should stand up and fight for their cut of the profits. The college athletes are the main attraction why the people come to watch the game, therefore making the players the main reason why the NCAA and the coaches get so much money in the first place.
