Transcript of AVANT GARDEN

WHO WE ARE AVANT GARDEN is a modular scaffolding / wall system that aims to create vertical gardens off of the existing facades of buildings. The pre-fabricated system of rails and planting trays affords an infinite amount of possibilities when applying the vertical gardening system to any given structure. These units can also be free standing, up to a certain height, for a short gardening wall. The AVANT GARDEN module system aims to provide a simple, economic solution for buildings that are seeking to incorporate garden space that isn’t available horizontally on the given parcel of land, or just provide a new “green” aesthetic look to an originally bland building façade. ZACH JACOBS | DEREK ZIEMER HOW IT WORKS The prefabricated structural elements are made up of Bosch Rex-Roth metal members that are easily constructed, creating a scaffold-like structure off of a building’s existing façade. In the central void of the structure lie individual planter levels where a number of plants can be grown through hydroponic plant growing techniques. Each void (bay) left from the structure on the exterior allows the opportunity to fasten a panel within the desired frame if the design requires such a closure or cladding. Some examples of such applicable materials are, but not limited to, glass, plastic (or any polymer), wood, linoleum, or even concrete. The EatMe Wall is a panelized facade system which serves as a graywater filtration medium. This product is designed as both a retrofit system for existing glass curtain wall facade construction as well as a product for use in newly constructed buildings. Our design focuses on the construction of a secondary facade system that creates usable exterior spaces along the vertical surfaces. Exterior spaces will function as a distributed network of controlled microclimatic pockets for the purposes of climate control, plant growth, leisure use and maintenance of the overall system. This design also creates benefits for interior spaces, such as better control of direct gains and sol-air temperatures throughout the year. The water filtration logic of the EatMe Wall is based on Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) for hydroponic plant growth and is calculated based on William Jewell’s method for water purification. CASE STUDY This system is based on the fact that wastewater carries nutrients necessary for plant growth, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. By looping grey water through the facade panels and their embedded plant beds the grey water will be cleaned enough to be either dispersed directly into the environment, or used for toilet flushing and local irrigation. The roof pretreatment area pre-cleans the black water into grey water to the extent that it poses no health hazards when distributed into the facade panels.
The positive by-products and benefits of the primarily filtration system of the EatMe Wall are as follows:

1) Variable plant growth: species distributed depending on the climate
2) Solar shading / control of heating and cooling loads
3) Air purification
4) Growth of plants with secondary economic value, either as food or pharmaceuticals (medical plants)
5) Spatial effect of the customizable architectural form Social Impact We hope to revitalize the social aspect of the community as well as establish a new produce co-op in the near west side. We can acheive both of these feats through the revitalization of the vacant lots in the area. Little construction would be required yet the benefits would be incredible. In our new vacant spaces, we could:
Host workshops dealing with agriculture.
Teach members of the community how to care for the vertical garden.
Host students from surrounding schools for field trips Since the space is relatively open, it can take on a variety of programs, all while being surrounded by and constantly reminded of the garden and its implications on the community. Steps to Take A library of vegetation 1. Seek out open lots.
2. Contact owners of surrounding buildings for compliancy
3. Assemble scaffolding units.
4. Make the lot public and spread the word.
5. Introduce community to growing techniques.
6. Start growing crops and establish Co-Op.
7. Sell crops for profit.
