Should schools or classrooms separate students by gender or sexual identities?
Position 1: Separate schools or classrooms perpetuate discrimination.
Fully desegregated classrooms ensure equal educational, opportunity, and achievement.
"Just as brothers and sisters learn from each other in families, girls and boys in co-ed schools have much to gain from learning side-by-side.
Gender equality remains a challenge, especially for students whose sexual orientation or gender identity fall outside the traditional categories of male and female .
Position 2: Separate schools or classrooms are necessary.
Boys and girls are different. We need to look at boys and girls differently at home as well as in the classroom.
Absolutely equal-but different
-teachers worked more often with boys and gave them more attention and "help"
-When boys called out an answer, teachers paid attention to what they said. When girls did the same, teachers more often ignored the comment and scolded them for not following directions.
-Boys were more likely than girls to be regarded as "troublemakers", retained, or labeled as learning disabled.
-Girls were struggling with messages about academic competency.
-They would become tentative about speaking up in class.
-Girls were good at "doing school" (neat work, prepared, and regurgitating information on tests). But not at critical thinking, and rarely took risks in courses and assignments.
-Boys were more likely to take higher level math, science, and computer classes. They were also more likely to drop out.
Differences Require Real Accommodations
-Do better in quieter classrooms
-Cooperation and bonding are encouraged
-Need brightly lit classrooms
-Teachers who speak in loud, enthusiastic tones
-Need exercise periods throughout the day
-Confrontational disciplinary practices
-Learning activities that engage them in quests for answers
-Social roles men and women are assigned shape Americans' view of appropriate education for boys and girls.
-In many ways notions of what men and women are expected to be and do have transcended those expectations.
Gender Roles in Education
-Title IX of the Educational Amendment Act was passed to ban discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.
-Prior to Title IX, athletic scholarships for women were virtually nonexistent. Women now receive 45% of the funding available in sports.
-Greater participation in sports where funding has increased women's college attendance and enabled more women to enter previously male-dominated professions.
