Ivan Pavlov(1849-1936)
Behaviorism-Audio Lingual Method
Implemented Pavlov's research to human application

Believed that human behavior and learning is based on stimulus-response based on positive or negative reinforcements

"Operant Conditioning"

B.F. Skinner(1904-1990)
Audio-lingual Method
Showed how a

stimulus
(food) paired with the ring of a bell can produce a desired

reflex
(salivation) with a dog

Eventually, the dogs would associate the bell with food and thus salivate, even when food wasn't present

"Classical Conditioning"
Theory of Learning
Foreign language learning is a process of mechanical habit
Language skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally than in written form
Positive reinforcement helps students to develop correct habits

A few types of activities
Repetition
:
I know him-I know him
Inflection
:
She bought the doll-She bought the
dolls
Replacement
:
Paul drinks water-Paul drinks
juice
Completion
:
I have my book and you...-I have my book and you
have yours

Essentially, Behaviorism is the prediction and control of human behavior whereas introspection or independent thinking play no role.

Students will learn through a system of reinforcement and punishment.
