Gay Rights

12 States with Legal Gay Marriage and 36 States with Same-Sex Marriage Bans
Interview: For Gay Marriage
Catholic Church’s Official Perspective
Catholic Church opposes gay marriage, social acceptance of homosexuality, and same-sex relationships
Teaches that homosexual people deserve respect and justice
In Catholic belief, "marriage is a faithful, exclusive and lifelong union between one man and one woman, joined as husband and wife in an intimate partnership of life and love,"
To be given the status of marriage, the couple has to be procreative
Views Against Gay Marriage
1) It Is Not Marriage
What if your brother or sister was gay? What would you do?
Would you tell him/her that God doesn't love him/her as much as you because you are not gay?
He/she was made in the likeness and goodness of God which is a Catholic teaching. So why wouldn't God love him/her as much as you?
Its not as if gay people are murdering others, commiting crimes, or sinning more than you, so why wouldn't God love them?
1. What is one argument for gay marriage?
2. What is one argument against gay marriage?
3. What did the Catholic Archbishop from Detroit say about Catholics who are for gay marriage?
4. Can you name five gay/lesbian celebrities?
Con-Gay Rights
-Same-sex couples should be allowed to publicly celebrate their commitment
-Gay marriage is protected by the Constitution’s commitments to liberty and equality
-If the reason for marriage is strictly reproduction, infertile couples would not be allowed to marry
-Institution of marriage has traditionally been defined as between a man and a woman
-Marriage is a privilege, not a right
-Marriage should not be extended to same-sex couples because they can’t produce children together

Christian/Catholic (yes or no)
PRO Gay Marriage or CON Gay Marriage?
Should homosexuals be allowed to marry?
Yes, everybody should be treated equal regardless of their sexual preferences
Does banning same-sex marriage violate Separation of Church and State?
No, individual church may decide its own belief or stand on the issue and it has nothing to do with the state’s regulation. If the state requires the church to recognize its belief then it would be a violation
Does prohibiting gay marriage account for unconstitutional discrimination?
Yes, this denies rights to selected group of people.
The Church’s perspective of gay marriage is that marriage should be between a man and a woman because they can produce children together. Do you agree or disagree?
Disagree, there are multiple ways to create and define what family is. In addition, the church doctrines need to reflect current sentiments of the people they serve; by excluding certain groups is not a sustainable business model
Since “All people are created equal,” does that mean constitutional protection for gay marriage?
Yes, people are created and should be treated equally.

Interview: Against Gay Marriage
Catholic Archbishop Non-supporter
Catholic Archbishop from Detroit said Catholics who support gay marriage and take Communion are contradicting themselves.
Catholic Supporters
Catholics protested over the belief made by the Detroit Archbishop that Catholics should abstain from receiving the sacrament of the Eucharist
Linda and Tom Nelson had a gay son. He was asked to leave the church he attended because he was gay.
The church cannot support gay marriage because it goes against the scriptures; the authority of the church derives solely from the scriptures
Its duty is to protect the truth of the Bible
The church strives for the defense of human rights and individual dignity, including gays.
The Catholic Church is against the physical threat of violence against gays
The word of Christ is one of hope and charity for all human beings regardless of origin, race, background, and sexual orientation
The protection of traditional family is one of the church’s main duties.
Church's Views
2) It Violates Natural Law
3) It Denies a Child Either a Father or a Mother
4) It Defeats the State’s Purpose of Benefiting Marriage
5) It Imposes Its Acceptance on All Society
6) It Is the Cutting Edge of the Sexual Revolution
Marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman which is by its nature ordered toward the procreation and education of children and the unity and well-being of the spouses.
Same sex marriage denies the specific primary purpose of marriage: the perpetuation of the human race and the raising of children.
Natural law teaches that we are made in the image and likeness of the creator and share in the act of creation by virtue of the genetic imprint of male and female.
Husband and wife are icons of the undivided, everlasting trinitarian love Christ has for his church
It is a relationship rooted in human nature and thus governed by natural law.
Children need both a mother and a father as role models. Both a mother and a father contribute uniquely to a child.
The absence of a parent may lead to difficulties for the child: drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, poverty, etc.
A child of a same-sex “marriage” will always be deprived of either his natural mother or father.
The mother plays a critical role in a child's development, communication, sense of security, problem solving, etc.
The father is linked to positive outcomes in physical health, education, and avoidance of violent behavior.
Jason Collins 1:30-3:24
The State bestows numerous benefits on marriage by its very nature and design, marriage provides the normal conditions for a stable, affectionate, and moral atmosphere that is beneficial to the upbringing of children. This aids in perpetuating the nation and strengthening society, an evident interest of the State.

Homosexual “marriage” does not provide such conditions. Its primary purpose, objectively speaking, is the personal gratification of two individuals whose union is sterile by nature. It is not entitled to the protection of the State, therefore it only extends to true marriage.
Moral Impasse
By legalizing same-sex “marriage,” the State becomes its official and active promoter. The State calls on public officials to officiate at the new civil ceremony, orders public schools to teach its acceptability to children, and punishes any state employee who expresses disapproval.

In the private sphere, objecting parents will see their children exposed more than ever to this new “moral."

In every situation where marriage affects society, the State will expect Christians and all people of good will to betray their consciences by condoning, through silence or act, an attack on the natural order and Christian morality.
In the 1960s, society was pressured to accept all kinds of immoral sexual relationships between men and women. Today we are seeing a new sexual revolution where society is being asked to accept same-sex “marriage.”

If homosexual “marriage” is universally accepted as the present step in sexual “freedom,” what logical arguments can be used to stop the next steps of incest, pedophilia, bestiality, and other forms of unnatural behavior?

The railroading of same-sex “marriage” on the American people makes increasingly clear what homosexual activist Paul Varnell wrote in the Chicago Free Press:

"The gay movement, whether we acknowledge it or not, is not a civil rights movement, not even a sexual liberation movement, but a moral revolution aimed at changing people's view of homosexuality."
Think about this...
President Obama proclaimed that the month of June will be recognized as LBGT pride month
“ It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American promise that all people can live with dignity and fairness under the law. We rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Suicide Among Homosexuals Lesbians are two times more likely to attempt suicide than straight women.
Attempts by gay and lesbian youth account for up to 30% of all completed suicides.
Gay teens are 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.
Gay youth are 4 times more likely to make a suicide attempt requiring medical attention.
Gay men are six times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

Think About This
Why did God make a man and a woman rather than a man and a man or a woman and a woman in the garden of eden?
Why is it that there are no gay marriages in the bible?
If there are legal gay marriages, how will children be brought up? If a boy has two moms, or if a girl has two dads? etc...
If we legal gay marriage what will happen next? Polygamy? Divorces between gays/lesbians? etc...
Views for Gay Marriage
Gay marriage would make it easier for same-sex couples to adopt, providing stable homes for children who would otherwise be left in foster care.
Legalizing gay marriage will not harm heterosexual marriages or "family values," and society will continue to function successfully.
Banning gay marriage violates separation of church and state. There are two distinct versions of marriage in this country - religious marriages made in church and civil marriages under federal or state law
Banning same-sex marriage is un-constitutional

Gay marriage won’t change things for the straight majority. The same rights will still apply; the same tax benefits will keep rolling in.
Interview of a Catholic Bishop, Anglican Archbishop, and a Christian Lobbyist
Fourteenth Amendment says we should all be the same in the eyes of the law. Millions of gay couples are denied the right to make life-or-death decisions for a partner in a medical emergency.
Gay couples are denied access to over one thousand federal rights, including the rights to share property or to take time off work to care for an ill partner.
