Topic sentence Every paragraph needs a topic sentence
Captures idea + essence of a paragraph
Usually the first sentence of a paragraph Why do you need them?
Helps to stay focused
Easier to continue writing
Give readers a better understanding
Guidelines There should be one topic sentence in each paragraph
Should make a general statement with a wide enough scope to cover the rest of the sentences
Must not be too broad or too narrow
Should have a strong direction
It was a wonderful afternoon. The birds were singing in the garden. The air was cool and breeze as I ate a hearty lunch at the courtyard. After I watched my favourite cartoon show, I took a one-hour nap and dreamt of more wonderful things to come.

What is the topic sentence?

A declaration/claim: not a statement of fact or observation

Fact or observation:
People use many lawn chemicals.

Thesis:
People are poisoning the environment with chemicals merely to keep their lawns clean.
Takes a stand rather than announce a subject

Announcement:
The thesis of this paper is the difficulty of solving our environment problems.

Thesis:
Solving our environmental problems is more difficult than many environmentalists believe.
Is specific, not vague or general

Vague:
Hemingway’s war stories are very good.

Specific:
Hemingway’s stories helped create a new style by employing extensive dialogue, shorter sentences, and strong Angle-Saxon words.
Is main idea, not title.

Must be in complete sentence.


Title:
Fast food – Convenience food.

Thesis:
Fast food has become the ultimate convenience food as it is time saving, easily available and affordable. General subject – Marriage

Limited subject – Honeymoon

Thesis – A honeymoon is perhaps the worst way to begin a marriage
General subject – Sports

Limited subject – Players’ salaries

Thesis – Players’ salaries are bad for the game, for the fans and for the values our children are developing General subject – Family

Limited subject – Older sister

Thesis – My older sister helped me overcome my shyness
General subject – Children

Limited subject – Disciplining of children

Thesis – My parents have several effective ways of disciplining their children
Soccer is played by over 250 million people around the globe, including 40 million women. Soccer is arguably the most popular sport in the world. The numbers of spectators in the stadiums and of television viewers amount to billions.

What is the topic sentence? We all know about these sort of arrangements. A little over a third of college students at any given minute are living with sombody of the opposite sex. You have seen them. Perhaps you know someone. Perhaps you are there. The invisible roommate in a dormitory where the bed is never slept in, the closets never used. The whole situation of boyfriend-girlfriend but where in fact you cross the line into something else.
