Born March 30, 1853
Was the eldest child but was not the first.
Father was a minister
Forced to quit school at age 15
Started work at his uncles art dealership, Goupil & Co.
Very disfunctional love life...
Fell in love with the landlady's daughter
She rejected his marriage proposal

Vincent fell in love with his recently widowed cousin, Kate.
Kate was disgusted and fled to her home in Amsterdam
Fell in love with an alcoholic prostitute named, Clasina Maria Hoornik
She became his muse,
companion, and mistress
When Hoornik returned to the life of prositution, Van Gogh was devastated.
1880 Van Gogh moved to Brussles
to become an artist.
No former art training
His brother Theo offered to
cover Van Gogh finacially
Van Gogh started to teach himself how to paint
1886 Van Gogh discoverd
He marveld in the brush strokes and the colors
Very passionate about
Van Gogh moved into a "little yellow house" in Arles
He spent more money on
paint then food
Lived off coffee, bread and alcohol
Started suffereing from Illness
It has been said that he started to eat paint and drink terpentine
Cut off his earlobe
Bought a prostitute
Gave her the earlobe, saying "Cherish this object like a treasure"
Police found him the morning after and was admitted to the hospital
Weak from blood loss and having violent seizures
Van Gogh was released from the hospial
Alone and depressed
Re-admitted to the hospital
Van Gogh would paint in "The Little Yellow House" by day and return to the hospital by night.
The people of Arles kicked Van Gogh out of town
Van Gogh moved to the
Saint-Paul-de-Mausole Asylum, a mental facility
Van Gogh started to paint in the hospital gardens.
He painted "Irises" and "Starry Night" while in the asylum.

Van Gogh was only able to sell one painting

Theo sold this painting for 400 francs
"The Red Vineyards"
Van Gogh shot himself in the chest
Died in the hospital 2 days later, at the age of 37
Van Gogh's brother, Theo, was suffering from syphilis, was weakend by his brothers death.
Died six months after his brother, in a Dutch Asylum
Theo's wife Johanna collected many of Van Gogh's paintings.
Many painting had already been destoryed
Johanna took what she could find to an Art gallery
March 17, 1901
Van Gogh's paintings were displayed in Paris
Van Gogh then became popular very quick
Today, Van Gogh is considered to be one of the greatest painters
Completing over 2,100 art works
860 oil paintings
1,300 watercolors, drawings and scketches
Several of his painting rank among the most expensive in the world
"Irises" was sold
for $53.9 million
"Portrait of Dr. Gachet" sold for $82.5 million
