what makes NIAS, "NIAS"?
Transcript of what makes NIAS, "NIAS"?
"Change I had know before, and it had been gradual. ...But the change that now came into my life, into all our lives, blasting its way into our village, seemed wrought in the twinkling of an eye" (25)
"They [newcomers] had invaded our village with clatter and din, had taken from us the maidan where our children played, and had made the bazaar prices too high for us."(27) Rukmani's family faces extreme poverty, and for money Rukmani's son resorts to stealing, her daughter (Ira) to prostitution. The author is trying to communicate the power that money holds in society and to what length people can go for it.
"The lad [Raja] was caught stealing-maybe, as you say, for the first time and in a moment of weakness-still, he was caught." (90)
"Like a harlot" (98) Throughout the novel, Rukmani's family and community suffer financially because of the drought. But they also suffer otherwise - Rukmani watches her children starve and even holds her husband as he takes his last. "For hunger is a curious thing... there is a gnawing and a pain as if your very vitals were being devoured. ... But of us all Kuti suffered the most."
"saw their flesh melt away, their skin sag and sink between their jutting bones, saw their eyes rtreat into their skulls, saw their ribs curve out from under the skin... they were emaciated twice over."
