Chapter 5
The evolutionary History of Biological Diversity Life on earth began after nonliving materials became organized into molecular agregates

Biogenisis is the theory that lige can arise only from the reproduction of preexisting life Current theory:
1. Small organic molecules synthesized
2.This molecules joined into polymers
3.Self replicating molecules emerged, made inheritance possible.
4. These molecules were packadged into membrane
RNA was the first genetic material
Before cells protoboints may have existed
-agregates of molecules produced abiotically
- with consitent internal environments and some
other proporties associated with life. Fossil record chronicles life on Earth Life on earth started 3.8 to 3.9 billion years ago
The earliest living organisms were prokaryotes
2.7 billion years ago oxygen began to accumulate in
earth atmosphere

eukaryotes
-multicellular eukaryotes ( appeared 2.1 , 1.2 billion years ago

About 500 million years ago plants, fungi, and animals
appear on Earth
