Digestive System Concept Map Food is chewed into small pieces with the teeth and mixed with saliva. Mouth Food mixed with saliva passes through the esophagus into the stomach. Esophagus The food is in the esophagus for around 10 seconds. Food is mixed with gastric juices and churned in the stomach Stomach The food is in the stomach for around 4 hours. The liver produces a green liquid called bile to help break down fats. Liver Bile is stored in the gall bladder. Gall Bladder The pancreas makes juices which convert carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into chemical mixtures Pancreas Digestive juices produced in the liver, pancreas, and small intestine break down the food. The broken down mixtures pass through the intestine wall into the blood. Small Intestine Digestive juices produced in the liver, pancreas, and small intestine break down the food. The broken down mixtures pass through the intestine wall into the blood. Large Intestine The large intestine's process can take up to 7-16 hours. The process for the small intestine takes around 4 and a half hours. Rectum Solid waste from the large intestine is stored in the rectum. Muscles push the solid waste out of the anus as feces. Anus This process can take about 12 to 14 hours.Full transcript
