Transcript of Gender Roles in peter pan

Overview of the Play
Peter Pan written by J.M. Barrie
London, England 1904
Main character created from memory of Barrie's brother who passed away at a young age
About a boy who will never grow up and his adventures with other children
Gender Roles in the Play
Mr. Darling
Breadwinner of the family.
"He is really a good man as breadwinners go"
He constantly demands respect and obedience from his children, his wife, and Nana the dog
Stereotypical male figure who brings home the money while the wife stays home and takes care of the children
Gender Roles in the Play
Wendy
"In Neverland, females are allowed in to the world in socially acceptable roles—roles that do not interfere with the order of men." (Shipley 156)
Wendy is brought to Neverland to become a mother for the Lost Boys
Gender Roles in the Play
Peter Pan
The leader of the Lost Boys and somewhat of a father figure to them (the boys come to him for punishment).
As a male character, he is much like Mr. Darling, set in his ways and sure of himself.
"Peter is provider, protector, and leader, asserting a masculine stereotype that is further exemplified by his defeating the pirates and saving Wendy, the proverbial damsel in distress."
Gender Roles
What are Gender Roles?
Gender roles are sets of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex.

Gender Roles in the Play
Mrs. Darling
A lovely maternal character.
She puts everything in order, including her children’s minds, perhaps a metaphor for the morals that she instructs in them.
Although she has a mind of her own, she is still somewhat subservient to her husband, who she prefers not to bother when he is busy simply because she already knows that he will dismiss what she says.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we see that these characteristics of both Wendy and Peter relate to the idea of growing up, showing that despite Peter’s insistence that he won’t become a man, the child characters will eventually be forced to mature and fill these gender roles.
