This device also allows for huge amounts of money to be saved due to not having to purchase Ethernet cables to connect all of your computers. 4. Wireless Adapter/Router USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a connector which is widely adopted by the international computer community. It provides an extremely fast form of data transfer as well as being able to power connected devices. External flash and hard drives also allow you to utilize this technology which creates a very fast and efficient passage way for data to be transferred to your external devices. 3. Jeffrey Francis Top Ten Scientific Advances in Computer Electronic Components 2. Graphics Card Touch screens revolutionized the way that society interacts with computer technology. Touch screens have changed the mobile device industry and have made “smart phones” possible. There is a high demand of touch screens in the consumer market in the form of iPods, phones, tablets, laptops, and even Microsoft’s new OS is geared towards touch. 5. Touch Screen The microprocessor totally revolutionized the size of the processor which as a result created the size of standard computers today. They allowed for powerful computers to enter consumer space without having to own a warehouse to house a powerful computer. Microprocessors are a vital part of our daily lives, which are utilized in every electronic device that we have. 1. Microprocessor Graphics cards are extremely powerful PC components. The gaming industry which is worth billions of dollars relies on the capabilities these cards provide. They allow for photo-realistic environments and models to be created. Special GPU software such as PhysX from Nvidia carry's out complex physics simulations which in gaming can give vibrancy to an otherwise dull, static experience. The uses of graphics cards also go beyond entertainment. 3D modeling software is utilized in everything from construction simulation to consumer product design. Storage is a vital computer component. The main type of storage device on the market today and in the past were HDDs (Hard Disk Drives). SSD storage is relatively new and promises an enormous increase. They are now used widespread in the mobile electronics industry for tablets and laptops but SSDs are used in desktop PCs as well. They are more shock-resistant, green, faster, have a longer life, and are cheaper to power. 7. Gesture/Motion Control There have been numerous breakthroughs in the way people interact with their computers. From traditional mouse and keyboard to touch controls, companies always look for new ways to innovate.Motion control is one of these innovations. Motion control is slowly being adopted by the computing industry which motion-tracking hardware such as the Leap motion and Kinect for windows. Windows 8 has gesture software that allows control of the PC with a swipe of the hand. This technology promises enormous ease of use and can used to view 3D diagrams created for the purposes of medical, construction, and other industries. 6. Cloud Computing 10. GPS (Global Positioning System) 9. 3D Technology 3D Technology is not a new invention as the first 3D films had existed as far back as 1915. Recently though this technology has experienced a revival in popularity with the new 3D PC monitors, 3D TVs, and 3D Blu-Ray media. Games and movies use this technology to create a whole new level of immersion for the viewer/player. There are numerous practical applications for 3D such as medical diagnostics, battlefield simulation, robotics, immersive education, and scientific visualization. The GPS (Global Positioning System) is an amazing invention which uses satellites to triangulate your position. With this technology it is nearly impossible to get lost. Computers add additional features to GPS technology including allowing you to attach location data to photos, upload route, and other data such as elevation and even heart rate. Laptops themselves can be used as GPS receivers; all they need is an attachment that you can buy and connect using USB or Bluetooth. In today's connected world it is becoming easier than ever to upload, download, and share information with your peers. Cloud computing is especially beneficial for business or educational work. The cloud allows for efficient sharing of work files between groups. It also is cost efficient for the workplace. Instead of companies having to spend tons of money on building their own data centers with servers they can send it to a shared data center. Therefore they don't have to pay for all the people, products, and facilities, only a monthly subscription plan that can scale to your needs. All they have to do is log-in, customize, and start using it.
